Safari using insane amounts of RAM

I have a mid-2012 MBP, 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD. I've upgraded to Yosemite when it first came out and since then this machine has been struggling. I didn't get around to post about my issue earlier, but I don't remember noticing this on Mavericks. Currently I'm on 10.10.2

After browsing for a while on Safari, few different sites, around 4-5 tabs open, Safari uses almost all the available RAM in the system. I start noticing the sluggishness after a couple of hours, as the RAM usage accumulates.
The RAM usage causes the whole system to become really slow, I get the spinning color wheel whenever I open a new tab, change song on iTunes, etc. Sometimes when I'm typing something even the keyboard becomes unresponsive for a few seconds, the color wheel comes up and the keyboard won't accept any inputs, then suddenly enter all the characters I typed about 10 seconds late.

The RAM indicator stays green the whole time, and I know everyone says if it's green it's fine, Yosemite will handle RAM management, but seriously, something is not right. It is not normal that a machine can come to a halt by only using Safari. Restarting Safari empties the RAM it was using and the system speeds up again, but until I restart I can still feel a small lag. Then after restart it happens again and again whatever I do on Safari. I made a screenshot of the Activity Monitor.

I use this laptop for Safari, iTunes, word processing and in really rare cases I might edit 1 or 2 photos in iPhotos. I think it's supposed to be able to handle this even with this amount of RAM and an HDD.

It seems to me that Safari is not doing what it should with the cached stuff.

the 700mb~ swap used is high yet memory pressure green..which doesnt make sense at all. Are you using any extensions? 3gb for safari is pretty steep

All I'm using is AdBlock and ClickToFlash. I tried disabling these and they are not the problem, the issue still persists.

I have a similar era macbook and recently upgraded my RAM and hard drive.

The 4GB RAM really chokes Yosemite imo, it works but you'll notice a significantly better experience just upgrading the RAM. Safari is a hog at the best of times, I've never got around that no matter what I could do. Yosemite's Safari just wants to eat memory.

Yosemite was the OS that forced my hand to upgrade parts. The 5400rpm drive became unbearably slow and everything was worse performance wise than Mavericks.

All in all in honesty no matter what I did in terms of reducing app usage, tab counts etc I could never get Yosemite to manage it's RAM effectively. You're either going to have to bite the bullet and upgrade or accept you're going to have irritation using the stock amounts of RAM and the 5400 drive.

Who knows - Apple might streamline the OS next time around like they did with Snow Leopard, hopefully they will. I appreciate Yosemite's a significant update in terms of features and aesthetics but it's so bloated.

Apple's just assuming you're running with around 8GB by now, it's irritating but considering how hungry future OS could potentially get it's well worth upgrading RAM anyway.

Ram's a relatively cheap upgrade and surfing around I found a great 256GB Samsung 850 Pro which is a fantastic SSD with a 10 year warranty. I was debating buying a new macbook but an SSD literally gives you an entirely new machine. Before it would stall and crash opening just iTunes, iPhoto, Chrome etc, now I can open 40-50 programs at once instantly with no slowdown or crashing (I did a test as soon as I installed it heh).

It's a fantastic upgrade all round and you'll just find the machine is always keeping up with anything you want.

Another benefit of the SSD is how much quieter the laptop is, no more humming or other noise from a mechanical drive - it's lovely.

Poor choice of words on my part. This is all from my experiences on upgrading RAM, my experience with Yosemite when using 4GB wasn't great and consistently under a lot of pressure.

I haven't had any experience with a current-iteration Air so I'm not sure how much better that deals with the OS and 4GB of RAM. All I can draw on is my personal experiences

The minimum official RAM requirement is 2GB for Yosemite and they still sell a bunch of Macs with only 4GB. I can't see 8GB mentioned anywhere?

Thanks for your suggestion, I just ran it on a new user account for almost 2 hours and I don't see the problem anymore!

Interestingly, Safari kept using only around 35MB RAM during the whole time, never really increased. Swap stayed at 0 for the whole time. The whole system stayed snappy.
As soon as I logged back to the old account, Safari is using 150MB from the beginning and slowly increasing. (already at 300MB after 10 minutes)

I suppose a reinstall would solve my issue then, but I'd like to avoid that if it's possible. Any suggestions for troubleshooting steps to try before reinstall?

Try this first:

• Exit Safari.
• Open finder, go to ~/Library
• Drag Safari folder to your desktop.
• MOve the Safari folder to the trash.
• Open ~/Library/Preferences.
• Drag com.apple.Safari.* files to your desktop.
• Drag com.apple.Safari.* files to the trash.
• Reboot the computer.

Launch Safari. Does the issue now happen?

If the issue still happens then rebuild your account again:

• Create a new admin user.
• Logout of your account.
• Login to the admin user.
• Open finder window, goto to Macintosh HD->Users.
• Rename your account by putting "_sav" at the end of the name of the account.
• Delete your account.
• Create your account again. This will create a new set of files for your account.
• Logout of the admin account.
• Login to your account again.

Now you can manually copy over the data from your old account "_sav" to the new account. I would not suggest copying over all your data at one time.

Then I suggest you do a clean install. Do a Time Machine backup first. Manually restoring the user data not migrating it over all at once.

Did you reinstall your extensions in the regular account after the the rebuild? 90% of the times, the high RAM consumption in Safari (actually other browsers as well) are caused by the extensions.

The main reason is because of sandboxing, extensions cannot share content between tabs, so they're duplicated per tab and sometime, closing the tab isn't enough to clear the content.

I'd suspect your problem is Adblock, I've seen a lot of complaints of it using a lot of memory.

Sorry for the late reply, I did not reinstall the extensions, it's running clean now without AdBlock and ClickToFlash, however the issue is still there, RAM usage just keeps on climbing. I really don't know what else I could try, I will have to do a clean install.

I know this sounds simplistic, but have you tried powering off the computer (ALL the way off),
Then rebooting?

Yeah this issue has been going on for about half a year I just didn't get around to post about it before..Anyways, I turn it off every night, and whenever just closing Safari is not enough to speed up the system.

Also tried SMC and PRAM reset, multiple times. Nothing seem to work.

How soon, after all windows are closed, does the memory pressure graph dip?

How soon, after all windows are closed, does the memory pressure graph dip?

It usually takes around 5-8 seconds for the pressure graph to dip.

Please describe the symptoms that occur without Safari. Understanding these may be critical.

When Safari is running the whole system eventually slows down, guess due to the crazy RAM consumption. When I close it the RAM dips, and stagnates around 2GB with nothing else running. With Safari I get the color wheels all the time after running it a while, when I exit Safari everything seems to go back to normal most of the time, and the system is snappy again. After force quitting it and then going into Spotify preferences and disabling the ability to open Spotify from links (Allow Spotify to start from the web) and restarting it made a noticeable difference. (I assume that the memory usage remains unexpectedly high for Safari after closing all its windows, including those that are minimised or hidden. If not please let us know.)

I updated my MBP Sunday to Yosemite and my ram (8G) was using all of it except 500mb. I called apple and this is what solved my problem.

1. Turn your device completely off.

2. Turn it back on and after hitting the power button hold down the shift key while it opens into safe mode.

3. While in safe mode look at your activity monitor. Your ram should be working normal. Opening your device in safe mode turns off what ever was using most of your ram.

This fixed my late 2013 MBP 15". I am now using 5.30 GB of ram as I type this. Before I was using 7.5 GB.
