Yeah, got a keyboard, it works on the iMac (older g5), it, works but is not an apple. What I'm wondering on some functions, where u might have to boot up holding key or two (or more) if can be done using one of these keyboards? Or do I need an apple keyboard to do these functions? Any thoughts,

wanted to add, could set it (keyboard) sys pref. to apple settings I believe but need one for a machine I'm working on, not running (sick mac) but if after it's set up to match up the keys and I unplug from the USB port would it go back to default. Have a new one ordered but not gonna arrive plus original I'm attempting a restore on. So only got this 3rd party keyboard to use for now. Idk, maybe I'll just wait on the new instead of screwing around but any thoughts or help be interested in hearing

Safe Boot requires the Shift key only.

In OS X, when a non-Apple keyboard is attached, the first time you boot, it will ask you to press two keys, one at a time. This tells the Mac what layout you have. An NV RAM rest will cause these screens to reappear but normally, you will not see them.

Thanks, leaning towards waiting couple of days for apple keyboard. Trying to get an old imac running, got some parts but if need the keyboard (forget the keys I'm might need ATM) makes sense to go with an apple instead of trying to figure what keys are what. Part of me was curious though and if can a use different or 3rd party keyboards key combo's (safe mode, recovery, start up manager etc.) Been away from these machine for awhile, guess one way finds out is to give it a try, yes

I've been using 3rd-party keyboards with Macs for 30 years now.
I dislike Apple keyboards and pointing devices and NEVER use them.

No problems at all with bootup key combinations, etc.
