Say more about your in-laws; their age isn't much of an indicator. The fact that you're asking, might be. Both my iDevices are on 15.1 and I'm older than they are. What kind of "safe" are you concerned about? Odd crashes? New/unfamiliar interfaces or behaviors? Frantic "I broke it!" phone calls to you? You know your ILs best, and what might throw them (if that's your concern). It's hard for strangers to say much more than "avoid it - it behaves weirdly" or "It runs smoothly for me" <- (this, if you'd ask me). But like most things, the truth lies somewhere in the middle and may be different for different folks. Personally, I'm finding some touch-screen misses with pinch/expand (could be my fingers getting dry with the colder weather); occasional dropped calls (could just as well be a glitch at the carrier or in my callee's phone or service); stupid inconsistencies (which have probably been there forever) like the default button for the countdown timer is Stop, but for the alarm, it's Snooze. Bottom line, v15 is a feature add release. Someone who's familiar with the way their phone works today and wants/needs it to stay that way, don't upgrade. If the improvements will outweigh the inconvenience of learning a few new things and unlearning some old habits, then go for it.

Thank you Robert for your insights into this matter. My ILs are not both new tech savvy. My mother-in-law is the admin of their household…

Before they went on holiday last Oktober, I encouraged her NOT to upgrade due to the fact it’s a feature update, that might change the way things are. So she didn’t.

Of course I checked about the security issues at that time, but was assured that the security issues / patches and updates only applied to iOS 15.0 and not 14.8 which was / is her last update.

So I think I made the right call then at that time. Sure didn’t want her poking around a new iOS during their holiday - specially with Covid-19 related apps and documents - and receive frantic calls, specially for herself naturally.

I get triggered easily when things are not logical and/or much different after an update of any kind or sort.

Thanks all for your replies. We’ll see what iOS 15.3 update brings. So far she’s good to go!

Cheers from - in a semi lockdown - The Netherlands

Good call - I'd have made the same choice for myself before a trip, too. That's no time to discover wierdnesses! You do know that Apple has said they'll keep supplying security updates for 14.x for some while yet? That should give you plenty of time to have a thorough shakedown of v15 before you recommend it to them.

Again thanks for your reply and information. Yes, security updates are key and priority in my own judgement for updates on my Apple ecosystem with dot.updates.

But for a new version release number.update I make different short lists for UI/UX changes.

To be sure, do you have a link of the source you’re using for the security updates from Apple for the 14.8.1 release?

TIA.

Cheers

Not a source for the updates, but here's one of many news articles about Apple having announced that fact:

And some how-tos for keeping your phone from updating itself if you intend to stay on 14:

I hope those help. I sure there are more articles on both subjects if you need more.
