Safe to delete from var/mobile/Applications ??

Hi all,

I've tried searching a bit but haven't found a clear answer to my question. Perhaps someone can help. I'm wondering if it's safe to delete iPhone apps by deleting folders from var/mobile/Applications. I'd like to know if it will actually remove the app completely from Springboard and the phone as well as if there is a chance of messing up the phone by doing so.

I've got a JB 3GS 3.1.2 w/ new boot rom so I'm trying to be very careful since I've got no failsafe and if anything goes wrong I'll have to restore to 3.1.3 and no JB.

The best way to remove App Store apps is to press and hold their icon until they begin to wiggle, then use the x at top-left to uninstall them. The best way to uninstall Cydia Apps is to open Cydia and uninstall them via Manage>Packages. You should be careful what Cydia packages you uninstall; uninstalling Winterboard, for instance, has been known to result in a boot loop.

Fair enough. My problem is that I have some apps that aren't visible on the Springboard (they're not hidden) but I see them when browsing var/mobile/applications. I believe they were failed installs using Install0us and some of them are there a few times. So you see the issue, I can't remove them any other way since I don't see them anywhere else.

If you use spotlight search do they show up, and if so can you activate them?

If they are uninstalled from the springboard then you can delete them from /var/mobile/Applications.

I have this happen sometimes when I update apps from the App Store. Sometimes they fail when updating and I look in the ~/Applications and I have two folders for an app.

I usually look for the most recent folder and delete the old one. Then i go back and see if the app still launches. If it does, I'm good. If not I remove it from springboard and delete all folders for the app left behind and then re-install it.
 
I deleted the Stocks app this way. I NEVER use it and don't need it. I'm sure most people don't. :D
