I am selling my iphone on ebay and the potential buyer is asking for the serial number. If I disclose the serial number, can someone use that number to reprogram their stolen phone into a clone of my phone, making it a safer phone? Any danger in disclosing the serial number?

phone will get blacklisted, or worse hacked, what do they need it for, then google it, no one ever needs the serial honestly

The serial number is the only way to look up the phone on Apple's website to see it's current state. (Warranty, telephone support and Apple care info)

I think it's okay.

When purchasing a used iphone4 off ebay, I always asked for the serial to check how much warranty was left.

The sellers who refused, I just passed on and bought from someone who did.

Never give your IMEI but safe to give serial to check iphone status on Apple site.

Yes, that's pretty much all they can do with the serial.
They cant get it blacklisted or hacked or programmed to a different phone.
That's tinfoil hat paranoia:D

If the only thing they need is to look your phone up on support website, then you can print out the information and black out all but last 4 digits of the serial and send it to them. We can't be too careful on what the criminal can do with your serial number.

hat is correct, police in germany confirmed with me to never give a serial number of a iPhone to a stranger but only show them the current state during the meeting for a sale., they can get report it stolen to police and then frame you to pressure you to sell it cheaper because once it's listed stolen and they claim police told them you can't sell it, apple will black list it.

No no no no no,
Your IMEI is what is safe to give out it i your phones identifier code (think of it as a passport) you give this out so they can check warranty if it is blacklisted etc.

Your Serial is what not to give out they can report it stolen they could blacklist it and even completely hack your phone
