I know there's a post already about this.

Don't know if it was about the 3G though.

Just wondering would it be safe to go without anything protecting the screen or the back/chrome.

I never put anything else in my right pocket with any of my phones, so it won't get scratched in there.

I just got it a couple of weeks ago and have had it protected since then with a RebelSerpent case and a screen protector - needless to say I prefer it without anything on it.

Does the Apple logo really get scratched easily?

I mean I just tried to scratch it and it seems to be under whatever the coating is that's protecting the rest of the back. Almost like varnish.

Screen seems pretty durable too... Would the new finerprint-resistant thing make a difference to scratching?

Any advice for a noob? :)

I am like you, my iPhone goes in my pocket naked. Yes, like you I tend to put nothing (except headphones) in the same pocket as my iPhone is. Yes, the Apple logo scratches easily, but it doesn't matter, it gets scratched off anyways.

You won't notice scratches on the plastic (unless its a really good scratch). On the screen you will notice scratches on direct sunlight and at the right angles for viewing. Mine has some I never knew it had (I had placed it face down in my night stand and that apparently scratched the screen).

Best advice is just to be careful with it.

Everything scratches eventually. It's up to you whether you care or not.

I actually just ditched my SwitchEasy case to go back to no case. and I've gotta say, it feels great. I never realized how slim the iPhone feels without PROTECTION (sorry, I'm not trying to rip on you; just so you know for the next time you spell it)

and BTW, I have a 3G S

Hmmm, this is pushing my towards going without one.

Yeah I just realized it myself when I took it out today. Seems like a waste to just leave it in the case for the whole time you have it.

Because thenyou never get to see the nice unscratched phone anyway because it's bulky and covered.

So it's either don't see it at all, or see it scratched - in which case you could protect it THEN so you don't see the scratches. :p

And yes I know how to spell protection, it was just a typo. :)

Thanks for the replies.

If you don't mind minor scratches or major ones depending on how you treat your phone no need for protection. But I have got a small crack on my iPhone 3GS screen already and it didn't even drop from a hight. But yeah if you care for it protect it!

I have not used one for my iPhone 2G it looks pretty worn now! But still works fine!

My previous iPhone was carried around without any protection and even though I treated it like a baby (careful where I put it, etc etc), I still got scratches on the Apple logo and afew (hardly noticeable) on the back plastic.

Like you, i prefer the iPhone naked, therefore I decided to get a slim leather sleeve, this protects the iPhone from small scratches/wear and tear, but still lets you use the iPhone naked.

:apple: KrayzieKray :apple:

My experience parallels that of KrayzieKray. After having gone commando with both the original and 3G, and incurring only minor cosmetic damage, I decided to get a leather vertical sleeve for the 3GS. I found one from Beyzacases that has a clever strap device (Roadline Slim) to help extract the phone quickly and safely. I use the phone with Bluetooth in my car, and having it in my pocket while driving risks cracking the screen so I store it in the armrest where there is also a power outlet. Since there are also metal objects that might scratch the phone there, storing it in the sleeve protects it well. Then I began to carry the sleeve all the time. I really like the form and feel of the phone, and like KrayzieKray, I found that a vertical sleeve offers me the best of both worlds.

I've had a White iPhone 3G for 4 months now with a leather sleeve made by MAKR, hands down is the best case I've ever had. Expensive but the quality is excellent and doesn't scratch my phone like incase sliders do. My sister had a slider and it scratched the back and the chrome bezel alot while mine has stayed in perfect condition since day 1. Even if you don't get the scratches on the back of the incase the bezel will still get scratched.

It's a phone. It's a great looking and feeling phone, if it is in fact "naked". Why keep it protected, never actually admiring the beauty of it's design, and ultimately replacing it a few years down the road when the next model comes out? What I'm saying is, why keep it pristine, and covered, only to eventually replace it, and never have enjoyed it to it's fullest capacity. :D

For reference, no, I do not use a case or screen protector. Yes, I am very careful with devices such as my iPhone. I pretty much keep it in my left front pocket at all times, and have experienced nothing other than minor "scuffs" on the Apple logo. To be honest, while I like to keep things pristine, it's a phone. Not a family member....just a phone. :D

Naked is the way to go.... this is also my third iPhone... original...3G and now the new 3GS. On the first two I have had some sort of case and at times film on the screen. I discovered the cases trap grit and scratch the phone worse that carrying naked. I purchased the 3GS on launch day and after 3 months still looks pretty good. Just yesterday I sold my wife's 3G to get her the new 3GS and when taking off her case to clean up the phone it is scratched all over the back and bezel from the cover . NAKED FOREVER !!! It just feels so much better and so far I have not dropped it...

If you want to use your iPhnoe naked - go for it. I do think at some point you'll start to notice scratches. Hopefully it won't be the oleophobic coating.

While expensive, I use a vaja ivolution case. It protects the back and front of the phone whilst in my pocket.
