It all depends what you do with the jailbreak. Some people go wild with downloading all sorts of customizing apps, and some try apps that pirate, bypass or allow free entrance into paid subscriptions. Those people usually get viruses or popups on their phones. If you stick with trusted sources it should operate as well as any other phone. I've jailbroken several iPhone generations and have never had any security issues. Just do your research until the next jailbreak is available and you'll be fine.

I've never had an issue with a Jb compromising any security.

People who use Ssh should change the default password.

Don't use shady repos and pay for the tweaks that have a fee attached. Support those Developers.

The advice to carry out research is spot on.

How safe is it to jailbreak ?
As safe as you make it.

There's a bunch of jailbreakers out there whose Apple IDs and passwords were stolen awhile back because they installed a shady repo that allowed them to install a tweak/app that allowed them to get free in-app purchases from apps in the App store.

Unknown to them, that tweak/app was phoning home their data to someone else.

So, these people were compromised because they were greedy and didn't want to pay for in-app purchases. Thus they violated their own safety by their own hand.

If you don't do things like that then you keep yourself safe.
