Apple has now released new Mac models with the M4 chip, and they’ve announced that the base memory spec will be 16GB across all models. This also includes the Air models, where the base model will now come with 16GB of memory, but the price remains the same. Have you recently bought a Mac with just 8GB of memory? Your thoughts and feelings?

Salty for 16 GB base?

I’ll start. I bought M2 MacBook Air 8GB base model on good discount right after M3 came out and saved hundreds of euros so I’m not too salty. On the other hand I’m now worried how long these 8 GB models will remain usable since Apple is pushing 16 GB themselves. For context my use is very basic. So far the base spec has been more than enough for me.
This was always going to happen, whenever they moved on to 16, someone would feel hard done by if they recently purchased an 8GB machine.
I don't think there's any reason to be salty or worried about this. If 8GB was enough so far, it will continue to be, especially for basic users. I think they made the move not because there is dire need due to AI (though of course it helps), but they were going to make that jump anyway and they took this chance to move everything at once, which makes sense as they refreshed the majority of the line-up in a couple of days.

I’m in the process of upgrading my old long in the tooth MacBook Pro for a new MacBook Air. I was going to buy one recently but hadn’t got around to it. I’m a basic user and don’t do any multimedia productivity so I don’t necessarily need 16GB of RAM.
At the same time I’m glad I hadn’t got around to buying one as now for the same price as the previous base model with 8GB RAM I can get 16GB. Admittedly there will always be something of better value around the corner but at least now I can get 16GB at no extra cost.
