Hello,

So I'm thinking of running a samba server to share files over my network. I don't have a Mac yet but I'm going to get a MacBook Pro in the near future so I wanted to make sure OS X was compatible with a samba server. In particular, I also want to make sure that it plays nicely with Time Machine. Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,
Zenze

OS X has been able to utilize Samba for many years now.

Time Machine supports Bonjour only from what I can gather from their Tech Specs page.

Awesome, thats what I was hoping to hear.

But I was talking about the Time Machine backup utility. One of the main reasons that I would be setting up a network file server (doesn't need to be samba necessarily) is so I have a place to backup all my computers easily. If I couldn't backup my laptop via whatever I use that would be a problem.

Get Bonjour on all the machines (included already on OS X), and you can backup to the Time Capsule.

Sorry if I was unclear... I am not using a Time Capsule. I have a linux samba server set up that I am using to store files on and share them between computers on the LAN. I just wanted to make sure that Time Machine would properly with this.

After farther searching I found that by default it will not, but running this will make it work:

Code:
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

I have no way of trying it out, but has anyone tried this?

My apologies. I wasn't reading that correctly.

I do not have first hand experience with this, but if you have a Linux server, why not export the volume over NFS? Isn't NFS a supported volume?
