Hi
just purchase a Samsung 830 256 GB drive and installed it in one of the bays in my 2008 3.1 Mac Pro running 10.6.8 snow leopard.

It's not appearing on the desktop, i've put in a different bay, changed the icy dock but the mac is not recognising it. Tried rebooting, nothing , nor anything appearing in disk utility

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions before i consider sending it back

thanks

Sounds like a bad drive. Have you tried putting another hard drive in the same bays that you tried the 830 in? Just to make sure the Bays aren't dead? Otherwise, if you know the bays are working, and you have tried other Icy Docks and still it isn't working then I would say you have a bad SSD.

I has exacltey the same problem.
Ordered a 128 GB SAmsung 830, did all the same stuff as you.
I phoned with the shop and they said it's a bad drive. Replacement is shipping..

Icy Dock

Same problem yesterday also with a Samsung 830 - but it was the Icy Dock that was not working. Switched to another new Icy Dock and it the drive appeared and worked fine. I have had two defective Icy Docks so far at different times. When they work, they are great.

Thanks guys for the replies, turns out it's the 2 icy docks that are faulty, I slotted the drive in and left it hanging there, rebooted and the mac recognised it, i have it initialised now, but now that it is back in an icy dock and slotted in
the bay the mac is not seeing it so i'll have to send the docks back and get something else. At least I know the drive is working!

many thanks for the replies

Hello Ronnie,

We have confirmed that the Samsung 830 and our converter line are compatible. The non-standard height used by the 2.5" Samsung 830 SSD (7mm) causes an issue where the connection may not be fully seated, as our converter follows a standard height design of 9.5mm. There is a solution for this and please see our page for more information, and note the particular model that this applies to:

MB882SP-1S-2B

Thank you,

Icy Dock

I am having the same problem with a Samsung 830 and Icy Dock in my mac pro 3,1. I watched the video and am pretty sure that my drive is seated properly in the dock....

Call samsung or icy dock?

Had the same problem. It was my IcyDock.
Try to improvise soemthing that holds the SSD without the adapter and check if it works.

Hi Weezerr,

Can you let us know the particular 830 series SSD model (model number, capacity) you're using? Please try on a different computer if possible, or another 2.5" SSD or HDD, and see if the problem follows or not. If you need more support, please feel free to contact us here for more information.

I tested the drive itself which was working fine. I then played around with the Icy Dock and pushed it as hard as I could against the connector. This finally allowed the drive to be recognized, although Im not entirely confident in the icy dock connection. I had it well seated the first time.

Hi Weezerr,

We're glad that the device was able to recognize now, however, it seems that this behavior is not normal, where you would have to firmly press to fully connect as much as you describe. We want to make sure that our customers get the best service alongside our products, and so we would like to offer you a replacement unit for the inconvenience you have experienced. Please contact us for further instructions, and we look forward to resolving the issue. You can find our contact information here.

I had to do exactly the same thing, first one didn't work so I ordered a replacement and the second didn't work either, that was until I pressed the 830 SSD in very hard, that was the only way I could get the SSD to be recognised. I don't think the ICYDock was faulty, it just needed to be pushed in very hard..

Interesting. Icy Dock support has been great and are sending out a new one, will update if this one is any different!
