Hi,

I want to put a Samsung 840 Evo SSD drive as my system drive in my 2010 Mac Pro. Will the Samsung software that comes with the drive work with a Mac (does the 840 SSD drive software work?). So all the functionality of the drive will be available for use with my Mac Pro?

It appears that the Samsung Magician application is windows only. The SSD itself will work with the Mac Pro of course but you won't get the RAPID mode where some data is cached in system ram.

Really? That is one of the main selling points of this drive for me. That's very disappointing.

Every Evo has a SLC Cache which is built into the device without the need of any software. It is sized from 3 GB for the 120 GB to 12 GB in the 1 TB drive
The additional announced 1 GB software caching called rapid mode is only available for Windows, but I really wouldn't care about this feature.

Frankly, I am more interested in the EVO because of the aggressive pricing.

I'm more interested in the 1TB size than anything else... the 840 and 840 Pro's have been more than great performers for me in numerous installs/configurations.

I installed the 500GB 840 EVO in my mid-2012 MacBook Pro. It is the best upgrade I ever made to any computer.

Previous startup time was 60 sec., now it is 20 sec. Applications open instantly.

DanielCoffey mentioned that RAPID mode isn't available, and that is because it is a special feature written by Microsoft for Windows that drive manufacturers are beginning to support. It isn't as if this is a special thing specific to Samsung SSDs.

Wondering if you installed it and in what configuration? I've been thinking about adding a boot disk to the second optical drive bay but after reading on this forum am reconsidering.

I'm a little concerned about running out of power. Not really sure just how much voltage I'm currently using on my PCI bus. Currently a modded GTX 770 with 2-four port multipliers.

Recommendations wanted.
