Do the Samsung 870 QVO 2.5in SATA SSD 8TB in 5,1, or more generally the 870 QVO series (not the 870 evo, not the 860 qvo but specifically the 870 QVO series ) have any connection issues on the 5,1 sata 2 bus either as a boot drive or storage drive ?

AFAIK the QVO series (all versions) seem to have issues, some people have them working ok, but hit & miss.
Also the 870 series seem to have issues with compatibility.

So combining 870+QVO I think is slim chance of working.

The 870 QVO uses the same V-NAND flash as the (problematic) 860 QVO.
It also uses the same MKX-controller as the 870 EVO (which apparently isn't without issues either in a Mac Pro 5,1).
So the combination of these two facts makes chances very slim that this SSD will work without issues IMO.

I have some updated information and another question about QVO drives. I KNOW there is a problem getting them to show up on a restart in sata2 5,1. I saw this once myself. BUT I was able to install a couple of these drives in late 2013 imacs with no problems, so presumably they have a newer internal sata bus ! my new QUESTION is, how do the QVO drives go in a 5,1 if you mount them on a

OWC Accelsior S - PCIe to 2.5" card ??

Interesting idea!

TBH I'm not sure what will happen.
However I've had multiple Accelsior S cards a couple of years ago , and all randomly disconnected every now and then.
All had 850 EVOs installed .
I'm afraid this sounds negative.... sorry;)

I had this issue with Sonnet Tempo card when 2 drives where attached.
Ended up getting a second one, with one ssd on each, and been fine ever since.

Not sure if there's a correlation, but actually the random disconnection I've had with these cards was always with 2 Accelsior S cards installed.
Since slot 3 and 4 share lanes , I've also tested installing one card in slot 3 or 4 and the other in slot 2 but that didnt make a difference.
Remains a mystery to me....

So I bought a 1TB samsung qvo 870 to test in my mac pro 5,1. (before I consider getting the 8TB) and I can confirm:

The 870 qvo still exhibits the same " disappear on restart" problem when installed on the sata2 bus of the 5,1. , both as a storage drive and as a boot drive where you get the slashed line halfway through the boot process, on a restart boot but not a cold boot.

BUT if you install the same drive on an OWC pcie card (I have the single model) then the drive functions properly both as a storage and a boot drive, using the card's sata controller of course. So you could put the 8TB drive on one of these cards to get some fast cheap storage and it should work ok .... I was getting 500mb/s from the 1tb model. Obviously not as fast as a bunch of blades but then 8tb would cost you heaps more ??

I note that since my initial enquiry, it IS possible to buy some 2 TB Blades for about 1/4 the cost of the samsung evo 870 8TB drive. So if you get a drive carrier that takes 4x M2 blades then I suppose that may be an option , depending on the intended use !
