Samsung just gave what amounts to an admission of guilt.

Samsung: Galaxy Nexus designed to avoid Apple patents

“The Galaxy Nexus smartphone, the first handset built using a new version of the Android system called ‘ice cream sandwich,’ is designed to bypass potential legal attacks from Apple Inc., the mobile chief of Samsung Electronics Co. said,” Lee Youkyung reports for Yonhap.

“‘Now we will avoid everything we can and take patents very seriously,’ Shin told reporters Tuesday on the eve of the Galaxy Nexus launch. His comments were embargoed until Wednesday,” Youkyung reports.
Youkyung reports, “Apple secured temporary sales bans on Samsung’s Galaxy Tab tablet computer in Germany and Australia on the argument that it copied the iPad. The injunctions will likely force the Korean firm to miss out on the key holiday sales season in both countries.”

“Patents are very complicated and can be difficult to identify, Shin said, but Samsung tried to ensure that no known patent by Apple is included in the new Android smartphone,” Youkyung reports. “Despite such efforts, he could not say with certainty that the Galaxy Nexus, dubbed by media as Google and Samsung’s answer to the iPhone 4S, would be entirely safe from Apple’s legal offense. ‘We will see if (the Galaxy Nexus) will be 100 percent free,’ from Apple lawsuits, he added.”

-----------------------------------------------

This is gold.

Shin just admitted they have either a) been copying Apple shamelessly the whole time, or b) have no understanding at all about what Intellectual Property means and don't particularly care to find out, or c) both a and b.

So NOW Samsung will respect Apple's patented IP?? How many units have these crooks sold already? They get away with copying and *then* make a late admission of guilt, and tack on a "we hope we'll be in the clear" statement?

Wow.

You can't make this stuff up. You just can't.

WOW you did the standard read more than what was in there.

Samsung did NONE of the stuff you are accusing them off. Instead they made sure they were well away so Apple legal team can not try to dig up some BS patent law suits.

But then again expecting you to do anything other bash something not Apple is funny. But at least try to post truth instead of your standard lies.

in my opinion, only 2 things mattered in the article:

- the Samsung executive who mentioned the lawsuits were eroding their brand equity

- they are beefing up on lawyers

the first part addresses why Apple is taking Samsung to the courts, the second reveals that Samsung thought Apple would only sue for financial gain (not much to be gained in this case) so they probably thought their legal risk was low.

whoever was running their mobile division didn't think Apple would attack their brand via lawsuits splashed across media headlines. their last offensive was against "PC"... or Windows... and was done through ads.

Lawsuits or not - the Galaxy Nexus is showing everyone what the latest iPhone could have been and I think that, more than any patent suit is going to be the thing that we will be debating as the months pass.

Yep that was my take away off it.

ICS even kills off what remains of the Oracle law suit as Google told the courts that the law few patents in contention killing off what remains in that law suit.

I'd rather have the GPU and camera of the iPhone 4S than those of the Galaxy Nexus. Let's not make this black or white. Both phones have one-upped each other on certain aspects.

we will see soon what he meant by this , as it was mentioned before Samsung is now doing exact the right thing , try to avoid Apples patents as far as that is even possible , and tries to find a way to backfire , as Samsung is one of Apples supplier for displays , ram and harddrives , but for samsung Apple is one of its smallest customers , so if Samsung can find even the smallest infringement of their own patents they will go for it now .

what goes around, comes around.

In my opinion Apple should be proud if it's products get taken as inspiration by another manufacturer and if Apples product's i are as good as they claim they have nothing to fear from a inspired product , simple is that , and i talk about hardware here , and Apple should see it as a challenge to perform better in terms of quality or price then the others .
Because consumers will only buy a product of a competitor if its higher quality for the same price or the same quality for a lower price , consumers only accept slightly less quality if its really cheap.

The exception are Apple customers in recent years when it cones to accepting flaws , no i dont start with the iMac problems , just the iPhone flaws in recent years ... which shows the iPhone is far from perfect

If all patents were respected fairly, and launch times were always on the same day for each product each company makes, then you could make a very fair comparison. They're not, and because one product will be inherently newer than his fellows it may boast a marginally faster processor or a better camera. The bottom line is software, in which case, use what you want, vote with your wallet, and don't try and turn personal opinion into gospel. IMO, Samsung is backstepping on this one, if only to avoid having their products blocked. But when multiple courts in multiple countries reach the same conclusion, you have admit Samsung is at least partially guilty.

Haters gonna hate, from which side of the board they come. In the end, people buy what suits them best. A better judge of product stability/usefulness isn't how hyped it is at introduction it's the percentage that would buy the same product again. :)

It's good to see Samsung doing what I call "the more mature thing to do" and simply just avoiding any possible future lawsuits. Probably for their own good to be honest since Apple seems very sue happy currently.

Makes me want to sign up with the hated AT&T just to get an iPhone.

"is designed to bypass potential legal attacks from Apple Inc."?

In other words,
"We pulled a MICROSOFT and copied Apple stuff in such a way that we'll probably get away with it."

Apparently Samsung lacks any creativity and just copies their most successful competitor. Just like Microsoft!

"We will see if our product will be 100% free of Apple lawsuits."?

In other words,
"Let's see what we can get away with!"

When my dumbphone goes it's an iPhone for me.

There was a murder today, and the victims name was Reading Comprehension.

"is designed to bypass potential legal attacks from Apple Inc." means 'designed in such a way as to not invite legal action (not infringe upon patents)'.

well now, iMessage is different to BBM etc in that you don't see the difference between a SMS and a IM, you could say that all messaging apps are a copy of ICQ :)

IMO iMessage is better than BBM for the fact you dont need a stupid pin, nor do you need to give everyone a new pin everytime you change your phone.

ummm you did not have to give people your pin when you changed phones ether. RIM handled that issue when you logged in to BBM servers on your new phone it would update your contacts in BBM and anyone who you were contacts with. Supply them with your new PIN and the connection would not be an issue.

Also it kept the two apps seperate. It is not like the cluster **** I dealt with today due to iMessage on why my mom and sister could not get what they though were sms to my brother because it kept defaulting to iMessage and his new phones is Android and his old was an iPhone 3GS. I spent a better part of an hour trying to figure it out until I got a hold of his old phone and needed to turn it off. It was not updated when it was not seeing a SIM card. Heck my moms and sister's phone still show a blue send and says iMessage (chat bubble is green) when they are txting with him.

Long store short Apple iMessage is a cluster if you ever want to leave iOS. They make your life hell and par for the course if you want to leave iOS Apple screws you.

I did not say iMessage was a copy of BBM, where did you get that idea ? Perhaps iMessage isn't that original to begin with uh ?

The whole point is this industry is built out of people taking ideas from others and reinventing them into something better. To claim there's copying going on from one vendor but that another is 100% creative and innovative is plain wrong. Samsung is #2 in patent grants per year, they do invent tons of stuff. Apple the same. Both companies "borrow" ideas from elsewhere and make them their own.

That's how innovation works. You don't start fresh and new all the time, you build on what already exists.

1) How is this gold?
2) ...Clearly, YOU'RE making this stuff up. You're reading too much into it. It's like if I write a poem for 5 minutes, and every literature professor in the country analyzes it for 10 months straight - Well duh, you're going to find SOMETHING that can somehow be related to what you want to think, doesn't mean it's fact.

How did Apple's notification menu not copy Android's? Just because Google didn't patent the idea doesn't mean it's there for everybody to copy. Clearly, it's a direct ripoff of Android.

iMessage is a ripoff of BBM. The basic structure is the same. Sure it's integrated into the Messages app, but overall, it's the same idea.

The Galaxy S2, (Nor the Galaxy S IMO) does not look like the iPhone. If you say that it looks like an iPhone, then you're basically saying every slab-phone with a button looks like the iPhone...

Clearly you're too biased for Apple. Yes, I like them, yes I use their products. But I realize that the GS2 is a better phone than the iPhone (IN MY OPINION), and so I switched to it. /story. /conversation.

^^^ This is why they do not lack creativity
Apparently Samsung lacks any creativity

Samsung overshot apple as the largest cell phone maker, not because they're a bland copy of apple but because they are designing some great products. I have to say while I like my iPhone 4, the this Nexus is a great looking phone and one that I am sourly tempted to get

I think they're copying a lot.

See where we go?

Lets agree to disagree.

All cell phones are a copy of each other, if they weren't you would only have one model.

Android does things differently from the iPhone, some things better some worse but they both have unique functions. I do think that Android is slowly pulling ahead with multiple phones while Apple takes it's time to perfect it.

I must admit that while I love the 4S is it behind the newest Android phones.

All this back-and-forth, one-uping competition makes for better products for the consumer so it doesn't bother me who "steals or borrows" from the other. Not my battle.

OP, you just made up some stuff.

The article didn't say Samsung copied anything.

What it did say is Samsung steered away from potential design flaws or risks that Apple and other companies could use against them. Hence, they take patents very seriously now. Probably all their employees have memorized all the patents they need and don't need.
