Samsung has a ton of 5G patents and is one of the leading companies that has conducted R&D into the technology, so for them to partner with T-Mobile is pretty cool for those on the T-Mobile network. This is also on the heels of the 4x4 MIMO announcemen by T-Mobile a couple days ago.

"The collaboration is set to include both lab work and field trials encapsulating “real-world mobile use cases and applications.” Initial testing set for later this year is to include mobility in an outdoor environment using T-Mobile US’ 28 GHz spectrum and Samsung’s proof-of-concept system, which is enabled with beamforming technology. The work is then set to include trials using a pre-commercial 28 GHz system early next year."

Of note, Samsung also worked with Verizon on outdoor 5G trials using the 28 GHz band at the carrier’s Basking Ridge, New Jersey, facility. The trial was said to deliver fixed and mobile wireless indoors, outdoors and in varying line-of-sight conditions at multigigabit speeds.

Looks like Samsung is all in for the hardware advantage over competitors? They need to ensure they don't use Qualcomm again and then they can put the final dent into Apple's iPhone benchmarking.

I think Samsung should work on getting their phones up to speed with the iphone. (Literally match the speed of the iphone).

As for LTE speeds, I honestly don't think most people are going to notice between 30 MBPS or something like 400 MBPS. Unless you're downloading huge files or watching 4k videos, which most people are not going to do on their phones.

But what people will notice, is a phone that lags and is significantly slower than an Iphone, so they really should just get their phone up to speed and worry about LTE speeds later.

Makes sense seeing they have a cloud service and 4k video files.....

The difference will be noticeable. Latency will probably be in the single digits. Upload speeds will also be greater. So when the HD or 4K video you just took is being uploaded to the cloud, and over 20 apps are downloading updates in the background, it won't affect your video streaming. And this will also be better for streaming or downloading VR media without wifi.

that won't happen until Verizon ditches CDMA network and that won't happen for a long time because how big there user base is.

Qualcomm owns so many CDMA patents that it would cost more for Samsung to pay royalties then just buying there soc that has CDMA built in.

sucks as I'm in Verizon and can't use unlocked exynos 8890 phones when people on T-Mobile and att can because of GSM network

an option for Samsung would be to just buy Qualcomm as a whole and use there GPUs and modems on there exynos soc but that would cost over 100 billion as Qualcomm has a 92 billion dollar market cap

a better solution would be to join forces and allow Samsung to use there modems for a discounted rate to build snapdragon socs in there fabs

Qualcomm literally ****ed up so many chipsets with their heating issues. Next deal should include an exculpatory clause that allows Samsung to remove itself after another Qualcomm fubar. They should just make Exynos GSM only including the US. CDMA is such trash tech now. There is little point to it because GSM is what serves as the backbone for global telecommunications. If they could just add Wi-Fi Calling and a US based warranty to the Exynos S8, I would be all over that. No need for a T-Mobile based S7. I settled on T-Mobile for the features rather than the Exynos optimizations.

lol everyone I know uses wifi because they blow through there data caps while taking a morning #2 what good is all that bandwidth if you have a 2gb data plan? you could run a speed test net bench and eat 1gb in 30 seconds lol.

5g is useless endless they give people 75gb plans to upload and download those 4k files

Well I have T-mobile unlimited LTE on 2 lines, so I rarely use wifi. I only use wifi to cast or mirror to my Samsung TV. And faster speeds does not mean users will use more bandwidth.

Also, most carriers are starting to offer unlimited throttled speeds as a entry standard. And even with throttled speeds on a better network, users will still experience lower latency and consistent speeds.

the problem is Verizon is the biggest carrier and Samsung can't pass on supporting them.i want to leave verso bad but I'm grandfathered into my old unlimited data plan and go through 60gb a month and never use wifi.i get a 20% discount from work also so that puts me in a tough spot to leave them.

we have 5 lines with 3 unlimited data and one on 2gb and pay 296 a month all in and that includes 30 a month for my gs7 line on a payment plan.

our total plan uses about 200gb a month data and I did the math so many times to swith and it's not worth it.

edit 3 unlimited (typing in bed half awake)

I know, but Verizon needs to make the permanent switch because it would be better for their customers to have more competitive price plans and services to T-Mobile.

they want to switch also and go voice over LTE but they have so many users on old flip phones like my dad that don't even have sim cards in them.it will take a long time to get every user on a new phone and there policy is no flip phone non data user can have a sim card because they want to charge an extra 30 for a data package.

my dad just tried doing this as his phone is literally 5 years old and said can you take my line and make a sim to use an older newer hand me down phone and not use any data and they said no way lol and offered a newer 40 dollar flip phone with no sim in it.i was there and an old lady was buying a flip phone also because she has no use for internet.

What I would do with your dad's phone is just buy a cheap phone out right, even if it is something simple or a dumbed down smartphone, and then just say "oh, I need this sim card activated" with Verizon customer service. If they are willing to just do an outright upgrade, you're set. At this point in time, I would say Verizon needs to pull a T-Mobile/Metro. We're upgrading, giving discounts to help ease the transition, then you're on your own once the switch happens. Done and over with lol.

lol we think alike and I tried that and even went to best buy and played dumb and was like my dad's phone broke can you burn his number on a sim.they got a new sim and started doing it and the second they went to pick the number it stopped them saying not a data line and needed to add data.
