DxO Mark has wrapped up it's camera tests for the year and here are the results. No Shock for those of us who are familiar with how amazing Samsung's cameras are.

I don't see how the S6 Edge Plus has 1 more point than the Note 5 and S6 Edge if they all have the same cameras, but good for them! I like that there's been a lot of competition in smartphone cameras recently because that means there's a greater chance for a modest upgrade from the iPhone 6s to the iPhone 7 rather than the usual slight upgrades like from the 4s to the 5 and the 5s to the 6.

What do you think about the possibility of Samsung going with a 20MP sensor with smaller 1.0um pixels?

I am not surprised. Samsung cameras and screens are pretty amazing, and the best in their class. Samsung pretty much knocks it out the park with their Note/Edge + line. They just need to make Touchwiz even more lighter, and fit the ram management.

I actually think the opposite is more likely. Bigger pixels and less MP. However I see them staying at 16 MP with bigger pixels.

I'm pretty sure the current phones have the same 1μm pixels. But even so, I hope that rumour is false. There's absolutely no reason to go any higher than 12/13MP when you can cram bigger pixels in that sensor. Hoping that the 12MP camera with a 1/2" sensor that was rumoured to be on the S7 makes the cut. That would give it like 1.8μm pixels! Combined with OIS, that would be killer.
It's strange, a family member, with a Galaxy S6, said to me today that his phone wasn't the best in low-light, and it is in fact one of the best on a smartphone. Just proves that phone cameras in general still have room for improvement. So please, make lower megapixels the new thing!

I agree with you, but the industry just loves to show off those shiny megapixel numbers

Sometimes Samsung tweak things under the hood going from the S series to the note series. They can have the same camera specs on paper but the note series is usually better. However the Edge plus and note 5 are from the sane prduction period so I'd expect them to be the same. However I think it's pretty clear that Samsung flagships have the best cameras. Have done for a while now.

Besides some instances where the color is WAY off, the S6E+ is very good.

Edit: Here is what I'm talking about. I'm not hating, just observing. Excuse the horrible image. I accidentally opened the camera and noticed the colors were incredibly warm. The door is white and the light in the room is a florescent blub, so pretty white.

Going from an iPhone 6 to a Nexus 6P, the biggest hardware difference (1/1A) is Camera and Nexus Imprint. Both are fantastic. Interesting to see N6P and iPhone 6S+ with the same score.

Did you take off the plastic ring from around the lens? Mines was actually crooked and blocking a piece of the lens.

Nope, mine looks okay.

You should try removing it anyways. I remember there was a big thing about how much improved the quality was when removed from the S4. I doubt that's the case in your situation, but it's worth a try.

The biggest issue with the current Samsung devices regarding the camera is the software.

The Auto mode is frankly terrible in low light, it clearly prioritizes a brighter shot at the expense of colour accuracy and noise.

In its current state I avoid using auto mode in low light at all costs as I can take a much better image using pro mode and manually setting the ISO vs. letting auto mode crank the ISO to 800 and give me a noisy image.

The other issue with the camera is the white balance, the S6 tends to favour a yellowish tone which can ruin some shots. The iPhone in this regard is perfect.

If we really want to nitpick, the S6/Note 5 default to a slower shutter speed thus leading to motion blur in darker scenarios, it makes catching a group of people next to impossible. Of course this is a situation that is difficult for all cameras but for the time being, the iPhone tends to do a better job at this than the Samsung devices.

The only improvements Samsung can really make are in software and in the low light area either by implementing larger pixels or a brighter lense. The daylight photography is essentially perfect for a smartphone and is competitive with point and shoots and dedicated cameras.

Actually this list is not up to date. The new LG V10 phone has the best camera to date in other tests. You can do RAW images from it as well. 1.8 lens.

I think the camera is really the reason I stay with Samsung. The pictures my Note 5 take are pretty awesome.

As much as I dislike Samsung phones and software, I will say they make the greatest displays and cameras. They've gotten so good that whenever someone asks me what phone has the best camera, I recommend a Galaxy S or Note over the iPhone.

Completely different camera.
I think you may be mistaken. It is the same camera with software enhancements. Hence the V10 will score exactly the same as the G4 since DXO doesn't take software into consideration (I think...correct me if I am wrong). The enhancements was also mainly to video recording (manual video controls while recording).

Well either way the tests have been putting it on top vs other great phones like the samsungs or iPhones.

Yeah I know. It deserves it too. The galaxies and LG flagships are on par imo. Although I do prefer the more saturated colours from the galaxy's cameras.

I miss the camera on my 6s+. While Samsungs have always taken slightly better pictures if everything is perfect, good lighting, not a fast moving subject, not a lot of different focal points, etc. I find when complexity is introduced my Note 5 pictures take a marked downturn in quality. Overall the iPhone seemed much more consistent.
