How much of that is from their mobile division? They make everything from fridges to washing machines too.

I'm not sure what this has to do with the iPhone but ok...

Great news for them though! They make some great TVs!!!

Did you read the article?

"Needless to say, it’s Samsung’s smartphone arm (and dare I say, Android) that has more than doubled the company’s profit growth, selling 380 smartphones every minute, accounting for 70% of their overall business."

The article says that 70% of Samsung Electronics' earnings come from mobile.

It quotes an analyst predicting 19 million S3's shipping this quarter.

Another paragraph noted that Samsung Electronics makes money from both their own and Apple's phones:

"While the next iPhone, expected later this year, will likely slow Samsung's handset earnings growth, it will boost the Korean firm's semiconductor earnings as Samsung is the sole producer of processing chips used to power the iPhone and iPad, and also supplies Apple with mobile memory chips, NAND flash and display screens."

I'm pretty sure the OP was being sarcastic. If Samsung had lifeless drones buying their phones in crazy numbers like Apple does, then their profits would be in excess of $20 Billion as well.

Samsung doesn't use cheap slave labor, therefore they won't have the same margins as Apple. So when Sammy sells Big Numbers, it will be an honest profit it invests back in it's home country, unlike some other fruity tunes company that keeps all it's cash elsewehere.

Have you seen Samsung's assets? They don't need an insane profit margin because they bloody own half of South Korea.

So those of us who choose to buy iPhones because they're the best phone to suit our needs are lifeless drones?

Not ALL, but MOST, yes. Definitely. Just ask an Apple Store employee. MOST people buy iPhones off of hype, and because everyone has them. Plain and Simple. If you didnt know that, then....well.........

Actually most people buy them because they work well. Thats generally why people buy something that costs several hundred dollars.

Wow I hope your being sarcastic, if not please google about Samsung labor if you think they don't use "lifeless drones".

So Apple Store employees are trained on determining why a person is making a particular purchase? And you've polled them on this?

How about carrier store employees? Are they given this training as well?

Got to wonder what will happen when Google pushes it's Moto devices to the forefront and Samsung and other OEMs get pushed to the background.

Is this just the eletronics part of samsung or overall?

I know samsung as a whole is crazy huge, they make everything from fridges to cargo ships

No it's good that the Galaxy S3 is having success! It is good that someone is finally challenging apple on innovation, Competition is good . And with iOS6 apple got lazy...........

So could the big dropoff in Wintek revenue recently have been caused by more people buying Samsung phones than iPhones?

Have to hand it to Samsung, they're the only ones challenging Apple in mobile profits.

Samsung Electronics has posted a record operating profit for its second quarter, above analyst expectations.

For the three months ended June, its operating profit rose 79 percent from the same period last year to hit 6.7 trillion won (US$5.9 billion) according to its regulatory filing with the Korean stock exchange on Friday. This was above the market estimates of 6.58 trillion won (US$5.78 billion) compiled by newswire Bloomberg.

Over the same period, the company's revenue rose 19 percent rise to 47 trillion won (US$41.2 billion). It did not give an estimate for net profit.

"Earnings growth, led by smartphones, continued into the second quarter,” Brian Park, an analyst at Tong Yang Securities, said in a Bloomberg article. He added that "with today’s numbers, any concern about Samsung’s business, as well as overall demand for technology products, can be put to rest for now.”
