Well it was bound to happen. An Android OEM taking software development seriously. Samsung just had their first ever developers conference for Android (and Tizen) in San Fran. They just released 5 new SDKs for multiscreen, gaming, Smart TV, Knox, and mobile. With over 1000 APIs available to developers now, I think it will be safe to say Samsung has taken the biggest step in separating itself from the other Android OEMs. So now we will hopefully see a broader use of the unique features like air view and other air gestures. This will also be great news for us Note users as the S-Pen functionality will only get even better. S-voice will also get much needed support. There's no doubt this was years in the making, so it looks to me all those so called "gimmicks" were just part of a bigger picture that most of us didn't see coming. I certainly didn't think Samsung would go this open. There are a few apps that have already made Samsung only versions like flipboard and twitter. Apparently the attendance turn out was around 13,000 which is way more than they expected. The next few years will be very interesting indeed.

Sounds like a step in the right direction. Now if they'd only keep going and also hire a competent designer to do something about the look of TouchWiz while they're at it.

Yes, this is very encouraging. For the potentials of the s pen, I agree.

a better place
They are also going full pelt with Tizen too.... at what point will we see a divergence I wonder ? They already have all the building blocks in place from their own side, just need developers to get on board and the fact all these Samsung api's are compatible with Tizen and Android goes some way to bridging.

I think in 2014 we will see a flagship Note & Galaxy phone based off Tizen to at least test the water for consumers appetites and willingness to use it. It's less of a risk when it runs android apps.

I'm betting the Tizen UI ends up looking a lot like Touchwiz. What better way to transition people into Tizen? At the same time I'm betting Touchwiz gets a major UI overhaul for the GS5. Tizens biggest draw will be it's ability to be run on multiple hardware platforms. If a high end Tizen mobile is released, I'll give it a dabble out of curiosity. But my daily will remain my Note 3.

Still have the carriers to deal with not sure what Verizon is going to allow. HTC opened up to developers too except Verizon still won't allow bootloaders to be unlocked. Now with kitkat it looks like big problems for device mods on Verizon. Also you still need the source to allow the modems to communicate with android (forget what its called) without it kitkat source code is pretty much useless. You'll have it on your device but LTE and calls wont work or camera for that matter.

It can only push the standard up for Android users (and compared to iOS I’d say there’s a long way to go) - but it’ll keep Apple on its feet and that can only be a good thing for us

I think Samsung smells blood.

Apple is in an odd position. Its getting harder to find markets to grow into. The only way they can post growth every quarter given their size is big markups. Probably why Apple is fleecing the Brits with a 1:1 currency conversion.

Then there is money grabs like the iPhone X that can't connect to a new Macbook without a dongle...You can't fast charge without a dongle and special brick...

Samsung knows there is a chance to exploit customer Apple fatigue. The Note 8 is already the most customer focused smartphone money can buy, period.

Here was me getting all excited until I noticed the date and realised this was a mass necro bump, away with the fairies as usual...lol

I get my Gear S3 frontier and Note 8 on Friday, I know the apps are still scarce but that doesn't really bother me, more interested to see how tizen has changed since my Gear 2.

The watchfaces look awesome, and I hear tizen 3 is due to drop on the watches soon too!
I'm going to treat this Gear as an everyday watch and see what happens.

I have a Gear S3 Frontier. Worth every penny. Love the display and interface. Overall design is very appealing.
