As a happy Note 5 customer, I am encouraged by Samsung's numbers. Yes, I know that exchange rates had a favorable effect, but they had strong sales of the Note 5 and Edge +. This bodes well for them to continue to make the Note series and improve on it. Also, it should mean a future release in Europe.


Please don't turn this tread into a silly comparison to Apple. Yes, Apple posted incredible #s and seems immune to a downturn.

But according to our local MacRumors "know it alls", the Note5 sales are supposed to be a disaster, less people are buying Samsung's, yet, the FACTUAL DATA says the complete opposite. We were well and truly trolled in the other thread, always best to wait to be "spoon fed" the data rather than to listen to a Samsung hater who spews pure and utter BS and unfounded rubbish in every thread relating to Samsung.

Yes, I have to agree. Some just have to criticize Samsung or their day is ruined.

Samsung, Apple, Microsoft (their new laptops and phones), and other OEMS make some awesome products. For me, I like using tech from many OEMs.

Same here. While my phone is Samsung, my tablet is Apple, I am actually waiting for the iPad Pro eagerly. I also have a BB Q10 lying around which I play around with now and then, and my laptop is HP while our home desktop is a 27inch iMac 2014.

I do not judge people who prefer to stick to one brand, but I do not like those who will go around trolling, posting nonsense about brands they do not use or ever plan on using.

Did Samsung sell double the amount of flagship devices or is the figure covering all Samsung smartphones? We had a thread on this recently and this article seems to tally with that.

Edit: the article answered the question. Sales were led by mid range devices. Not that it matters to Samsung because it's good news for them.

Sounds like you are fishing a little here. Perhaps we are not referring to the same thread but a recent popular one discussing this had nearly everybody in agreement that Samsung sold more devices than most. The discussion point was that they make up a fair chunk of their marketshare by selling low to mid range smartphones. The article in this thread actually says that too. They have made a tidy profit this quarter though and I think someone would have to be pretty sad to be offended by that lol.

Perhaps the 'troll' or poster you disagreed with was referring to the high end market rather than Samsung's whole range? As I say I'm not familiar with that particular discussion. It's still either iPhone or Samsung in the market when I think of good devices. If one company sells more than the other it makes no difference to the individual. In my circle and profession the iPhone has been king for a few years now, but if somebody has an alternative it is nearly always a Samsung.

Remember both these devices use Samsung components from CPU, RAM, to Display and some of them the Camera sensor. So selling more of them is sure to bring in great profit.
The 2nd article is all about market share, so the low and mid end helped keep volume of sales up.

This, total sales is lead by mid rangers, but profits lead by the high end. Glad to see them getting rewarded after finally making good high end devices, hope they can build on this and and keep focus on improving in the right direction.

Fortunately Samsung sell both, the cheeseburgers brought in the volume, and the prime steak brought in the profit due to higher margins.

Perhaps the Chinese market has made up for it and they don't need this particular market for the Note line any more?

So something that the techsites don't talk much about is small markets where Samsung, Apple etc...enjoy great sales is markets like where I am, South Africa. Usually we get the latest products sametime as Europe, but with the Note5 Samsung SA said they'd bring it here in mid November...they brought it in early October, same situation with the Note Edge, this is usually due to overwhelming demand.

I am guessing they did the same with other small markets that buy high ends in great numbers e.g. Nigeria, Kenya, the UAE etc...

Would be great if we had a breakdown of the distribution.

Yeah, it'seems very surprising. Obviously, Europe's a huge market. Only Samsung knows their breakdown. Also, with more time, maybe, a later Europe release will help their Note 5 and Edge plus?

It's highly doubtful we'll see this breakdown, but it would be interesting.

It's pretty obvious they released the Note 5 a month earlier than expect to artificially prop up their Q3 profits while also taking opportunistic advantage of currency FX, and their Q3 is also traditionally the weakest Q4 Apple quarter due to seasonality.

Who wants to bet their Q4 will be another YoY decrease again?

Apple does similar to prop up their seasonally bad quarters.

Could be. After all, Samsung was making a killing with phablets, and then Apple jumped in to get a piece of the action.

A similar situation happened when iPad sales dropped partly due to people moving to (mostly Samsung) phablets.

Both Apple and Samsung go where the money is, and it can affect the other's YoY numbers once a market is split between them.
