The iPhone SE wouldn't actually factor into those results as yet. It's also not a major phone release, so unlikely would impact as much as a flagship new release regardless.

It is still good news for Samsung and all the Android OEMs...they all picked up market share.
With the success of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge and upcoming Note 6 it should help Samsung to release the foldable screens we have heard so much about for a couple years now.
Then I don't think the iPhone SE is going to make much difference tbh..

This is nothing new...the same trend has happened for the past few years now...Apple's share spikes in the 4th quarter after the release of their new phone, while Samsung's spikes the 1st quarter of the following year coinciding with the release of the new Galaxies.

That said, it's about time Samsung got out of the dive they'd been on.

That's fine but the trend is still the same...Apple gains market share in Q4, loses it while Samsung gains in the following Q1. And of course Apple isn't going to replicate the crazy sales they had with the release of the 6 and 6+, their first dramatic increase in phone/display sizes.

Samsung should expect to see an increase...they put out their best phones, ever. I'll be more curious to see what happens over the course of the remainder of the year, especially after the iPhone 7 is released this fall. Those results will truly indicate if Apple is significantly wavering.

shows how good the S7/edge is this year but as mentioned a bigger sign will be with the iphone 7. Rumours right now don't have loads excited but who knows what we may see.

The bigger new look appears to be in 2017 from all rumours.

S7 edge has the best display, great camera, removeable storage..that to me is why their sales have been so good. More storage is what more wanted

Competition is gonna make all our choices great. Currently, the Android choices are stacked high. You have your two counter options in the S7/Edge and the HTC 10. Then you have a more niche and unique option in the G5. And then, the more affordable options in the Nexus series. Great choices.

Kudos to Samsung. It will be hard to maintain though, I think, as competition rises and as the iPhone 7 comes around.

There is just so much more competition right now. It will be interesting to see Q2 sales figures and YoY data as well.
Samsung listened to it's customers and brought back features they had removed. It will be interesting to see what happens with the Nexus phones and Note 6 on the Android front along with the iPhone 7 for Apple. Some really great phones coming in the second half of this year!

Seems to be a trend over the last few years.

Samsung had pretty good results, just wonder how much of an effect the early bogo had in the us on the numbers.

Well they haven't announced their results for the quarter yet. Last quarter saw such minimal gains year over year that sales were said to be flat. At the last earnings call Apple predicted that they would see a drop in sales for the upcoming quarter. Apple will be announcing their sales for the quarter on Tuesday next week and it is most likely that they will anounce a decrease in sales year over year.

How many times have you tried? I walked in and walked out with the platinum. Black and silver were available as well. It was also readily available in DC because I went with a friend who was comparing it to the iPhone 6Plus. Best Buy has it in stock.

Yeah, foldable screens will change the market quite a bit. But I think it will take time, and there is always the chance that oems will screw it up. Putting aside implementation and assuming it will actually be a good product, I think the issue will be pricing. Flagship smartphones are already $800-1000 or more. With foldable screens I guarantee Samsung will want to price them higher and create a new category, which if they sell then other companies will follow the pricing strategy. But if it's too high then they won't sell well, most people can't afford a $1200 phone. Although to counter that consumers would be buying a phone and a tablet in some respects.

It will take some time for foldable screens to come down in price, and be offered in the low/mid range.

This can only be good news. Time for Apple to feel the heat so they can start accelerating the pace at which they upgrade the iPhone's specs.

No 2GB of RAM for the iPhone 7 while the Note 6 gets 6GB, for example. Or 16GB of storage and 750p standard in 2016.

Quantity will likely be a problem at first, too.

IIRC, Samsung has said that they might only be able to produce 40,000 folding displays a month.

They're gonna be hard to get for a while. That'll drive up the street price.
