I know i said how much i loved the "real android" three days ago when i finally got a nexus 4 after much hesitation. But it looks to me that combined with the hardware limitations (coming up below), i am again getting the same feeling with stock android as i did when i flashed slimbean on my old S3....

In short, i am not liking the nexus 4, and apart from the lockscreen widgets, the nexus 4 and 4.2.2 do not feel anything great against my now sold S3 running touchwizzed 4.0 or 4.1.

WHAT DID YOU SAY?

Yeah you guys heard it right, i feel samsung does something right in touchwiz. May be it is because it is so similar to iOS in some respects, but that cannot be all because i ran ICS for 4 months on a captivate as my sole daily driver so that must be a long enough time to kill that familiarness.

So what are the hardware limitations?

Well i am not talking about the not so important CPUs, RAMs etc which are fine even on an old galaxy nexus. I am talking about sound quality, which is a joy on both the iPhone 5 and S3, i would even give the stock S3 music player an edge because for some reason it sounded quite rich, the N4 is meh. I do listen to music a lot.

Speaker in the S3 beats the N4 easily too. I missed alarms twice so far on the N4, while on S3 there was no way i would miss one.

Next is camera. Again, the S3 wins by a handy margin and has been a tie with IP5 IMO, may be needs a bit love in extremely low light but the N4 is no hope.

I honestly thought running stock android is more valuable than the above, but no, i was wrong. I would rather have the camera and decent sound quality which are my everyday needs, stock android is not.

On the software side, i cannot imagine that i am saying this, but for some reason the colorful touchwiz styled apps seem to look easier on my eyes than the consistent white/black/white/black theme in all nexus apps. Sure one can spend a lot of time trying to theme it all, but 1) i wanted to run a non-rooted nexus and 2) the time spent didn't look favorable.

And then it is the small things again. The google music app on the nexus doesn't recognize downloaded media off the internet, while the GS3 actually did. The clock app in 4.2.2 is still the same as 4.1 or 4.0, showing a huge clock as the front page (really?) with smallish icons hidden. I stared at the app for a minute and then realized "oh, the alarms are there". The clock app on S3 is nicely laid out. You have the world clocks ticking instead of the redundant huge clock face, tabs showing alarms, timers etc. Interestingly this is how the iOS clock app is also laid out, but i found it ends up being more "useful".

I also quite like the way samsung tucks those scrolling toggles in the notification shade instead of a separate page. Feels more "built in" and has more toggle options than the ones offered in stock nexus. The notification shade is also a bit more "lively" than the simple black and white everything which quickly became annoying to ME (YMMV).

Also while the build quality of the nexus 4 is phenomenal, i don't know why sites do not list it at the top when recommending phones with good build, it really is solid, the looks are hideous. I cannot help looking at the handset and going, "eww, such a ugly handset". This seems to be the trend since the nexus S. Don't know why nexus has to be so ugly.

And dare i say it, yup you heard it right, the S3 "looked" much nicer to me, especially in white (which masked the strange contrast of lit capacitive buttons against the frame). I put my N4 next to a buddy's S3, and the S3 actually started to look better to me.

And, finally, i would say that the N4 was every bit as smooth as my iP5, however, i felt the same way on my old S3 running 4.0 (only spent 2 days with 4.1 on S3 so don't know if i am qualified to comment). It was also snappy, the so called "stutter here and there" was never an issue.

And strangely, i don't even find using 4.2.2 to be so mind blowing better than even 4.0 on the S3 was. I think post ICS and now Jellybean, as the S3s now have that, the difference between a S3 and N4 is not the same as say, a galaxy nexus and S2.

So yeah, that was my rant, wonder if anyone else felt the same. Hah.

As someone who went from a Nexus 4 to a Note 2 I would have to agree.

I liked the N4 but nothing was "great" about it. Speaker? Barely adequate. Camera? Below average. Battery life? Ugh. Screen? Didn't "pop" for me.

That said, it got me to take notice of Android so I won't complain. :)

That's odd. The vast majority of my music in Google Music (probably around 90%) was downloaded from the web at some point in time, and it recognizes every single one without exception.

I ran pure asop on my gs3 and went back to touchwize because I missed the features Samsung put in and honeslty it just ran smoother.

Now I run touch with tweaks that I like from asop and ics like the blue colors in the drop down and run a launcher that makes my home page look asop but Im still on touch so I get the best of both worlds

I said I would see what the Nexus 5/Motorola X Phone are about but again, the S4 is leading in mindshare over these two. The HTC One is a dark horse, however.

That's the beauty of the Android platform, the choice. When I bought the Galaxy S3, it was a stopgap between the GNex and the N4. While I enjoyed the GS3, I like the N4 much better. I've also had the GN2 and GN1, and the same is true with those.

Not that.

I download a file off chrome. I move it from downloads to music using astro.

Now on GS3, the stock music app recognizes the sound piece, and will play it.

The nexus on the other hand said: "no music on the device, connect phone to computer to transfer through USB".

Really?

That is what i hated about the non-jailbroken iPhone too...the nexus brought it back somehow. The stock music app cannot play a locally managed audio file and recognizes media only after you connect to USB?

Of course i could upload the piece to google music on my phone. But that is an extra step because i would download it locally again anyways. It is like going north and then coming back south before going east.

This is exactly where I am at. The two things I like better on the nexus 4 is the quality of the phone itself and the charging orb. Everything else I like better on the note 2. I guess I just answered my dilemma with that statement.

Ive had the Galaxy S3 since launch. I purchased the Nexus 4 back in November when it came out and after a day sold it.

Although a nice phone, I preferred the Galaxy S3.

I guess I'm a bit lost here. When I download an audio file, I have no problem playing it, and have never seen that message you're talking about. Maybe I'm not understanding what you're saying fully.

Google actually lost my money on the N4 with their screwed up launch. I was one of those that ordered on launch day and then got back ordered 2 or 3 hours later. It ticked me off enough that I decided to just cancel the order and stick with my S3. It's turned out to be a great decision.

I do love Nexus devices, but I get what the OP is saying about some of the aspects of pure Android. I don't like the separate section for toggles (some of which aren't even toggles, but shortcuts to the settings app). The camera, from everything I've read, can't hold a candle to the S3 (and this is important to me as I use the camera on my phone in my job). And, again, the battery life just isn't up to par (and with no removable battery, this is a deal-breaker).

What the S3 has done is allowed me to realize what I really want/need in a phone. The big screen, SD card slot, removable battery, etc. These have become the things that matter most to me. Going forward, if a phone doesn't have at least 2 of 3 of these requirements, I'm not sure I'll be happy.

I must admit that I had both phones, it was a hell of a job deciding which to keep, I went back and forth for months, today I put my SGS3 in a bag and sold it. I really enjoyed using both, I would have liked to have kept them both but couldn't afford to. I sold the S3 because the S4 will be announced shortly and there would be a sharp decline in its worth, the money I got from the S3 will offset a new S4, which will leave me with the S4 and Nexus4, if I had sold the Nexus I would be left with two very similar phones.

I am not a power user and TBH, some of the things you fellas use your phones for just leave me confused and feeling very, very old, all this talk of multitasking and whatnot, bloody hell, I sometimes find myself stood at the top of the stairs, scratching my head and thinking what did I come up here for?

Open chrome, download this: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/download/b6462be772e769a0c23c24d162ac7abeee660c09

Then move it into from your downloads directory to your music directory on the phone using a file manager. No uploading or computer involved.

Then open google music.

It doesn't play it for me, does it play for you? Then something isn't right on mine.

This is something I also took into consideration. I know when new phones come out in late 2013 I will be interested, and the nexus 4 will get me a lot less than the note 2 would. I sold an iphone 5 that paid for all but $30 of a contract free note 2.

Ok, I see the issue here. Apparently with some file managers, it seems there is a step that is being left out that basically refreshes the file system. Depending on what app you were using, that caused the problem. For example, if you try that with Astro, it will not work after you copy the file to the music folder. Prior to copying the file, it will play fine, but after copying and pasting it into the music folder, there is something Astro is not doing to refresh everything. If you use ES File Explorer and do the exact same thing, it actually works fine in Google Music. It seems ES File Explorer is making the extra step that file managers such as Astro, are not.
