A natural progression, they already had a finger sensor in the S5, so tweaking it to a touch based setup is not all that surprising.

It would seem like the natural progression for them. Touch is easier to use than sliding a finger.

Has it been mentioned anywhere in the rumors, which fingerprint sensor company is making it ?

Edit: aha. Might be this one, from a Swedish company called "Fingerprints".

Touch Fingerprint Sensor FPC1150, the world´s first touch fingerprint sensor specifically developed for front mounted as a home button on the front side of an Android smartphone or tablet.

"...offers excellent 3D pixel sensing technology that reads virtually any finger: dry or wet."

(The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 used one of Fingerprints' other touch sensors.)

It would be nice to just touch a designated spot on the display instead of a home button. :)

Agreed. Plus, from what I've read online, the swipe method they are currently using isn't that accurate.

I don't use a lock/password on my phone but if a fingerprint scanner could unlock as fast and be as easy as swiping on the lock screen I would use it

If it is the same one as the Ascend Mate 7, that's good news as it's supposed to be excellent.

Hmm, Im not sure I'd like that. I got very spoiled with the iphones where you can click to power on and just leave your finger for a split second to open. Although I must say with an xposed module on android you can skip fingerprint security if you are in a safe wifi and/or Bluetooth connection this has become less of an issue.

But it would work the same way as TouchID does now. Except you don't touch a button...you touch a designated spot on the display. Much the same way you do the home button on an iphone. This would reduce the need for a physical home button and shrink the bezels.

It's very accurate for me on the Note 4. But swiping one hand with my left hand is so unnatural for me that it takes multiple swipe. Swiping one hand with my right hand is flawless and quick. But obviously, the touch option is much better and I look forward to see it implemented on Samsung phones. I hope most other manufacturers jump on board too.

Or any spot on the display, for that matter!

Capacitive touch sensors already measure the distance of our skin from the screen, which is then used to figure out center of touch and pressure. They just need to include a much finer mode to measure ridges.

I think it's only a matter of time before it become cost effective to either have the touch sensors do it, or perhaps have a special spot on the cover glass with its own sensors (this has been demo'd too).

I can't wait! That would be perfect. Then set preferences in the fingerprint software to wake the display after a successful authentication. No more home buttons to push and no more swiping.

Good, that means the Note 5 will get it too then. I can swipe to unlock about 95% of the time with the two hands. one-handed thumb swipe takes more tries cus of the awkward angle of the thumb. cerberus takes my picture whenever i fail twice in a row...

Well, with the Note 4 you still have to do 2 actions, you have to press the power button or home button then the fp swipe. So if you press the home button to turn the phone on, you still have to reposition your finger and swipe down. The iPhone is still 2 actions, but they are seamless, fast and you don't have to reposition your finger. It really helps with a large phone trying to open and unlock it one handed. I think if they did a spot on the screen you would still need a method to actually turn on the phone. Also I hope you just put your finger down, ifyou have to swipe then I don't see this accomplishing much.

As for the physical home button, I'm all for increased bezels but I personally like physical home buttons and would hate to lose it. What you gain in physical bezel you lose in the soft buttons taking up space, although you can always do full screen mode so there is that. Still I'd be happy if they reduced the top bezel and put in a "screen speaker" like the sharp phone has, and kept a minimal bottom bezel with an oval flat physical home button.

I would really like the finger sensor on the back like the Snapdragon developer phone. But then again, it might be a hassle if mounted in the car.

That's true. Many times, I unintentionally unlocked the iPhone cause I just wanted to check the time.

This makes more sense since transparent display already exists and it eliminates the huge bezel like on the iPhone 6 and 6+.

Hope this is just another false rumor since using fingerprint alone is a flawed idea and legally it's not protected like a password.

If they opt for the same button size, I imagine it'll be a major PITA to get your finger lined up properly each time. Not to mention the rotate-ability.

Yeah seems like they have to go with a round button like the iphones if it's going to be touch based. Bleh, I hope they don't increase the bezel size, but at the same time I don't want to lose my home button.

Try not to be so ignorant when you laugh at others.

Furthermore, your fingerprint is exposed when you're unconscious and even when conscious you tend to leave them all over the place that's susceptible to lift and replay attacks. It's not meant to be used alone but as a multi-factor system combined with password and/or token.

I'd say good luck lifting a print and using it on a TouchID. The demo was just shown at a blackout conference, and lets just say as long as you don't have the NSA after you no one is going to replicate it.

Yeah that may be a real PITA...if you're an employee at the Pentagon or CIA or something...

For 99% of us mere mortals a fingerprint sensor (which works well) is a pretty darned dandy thing to have. For me personally it's probably the #1 thing I'm happy about since moving back to iPhone. If Samsung could come up with one that works as smoothly, that would go a long way towards making Galaxy phones a viable alternative for me again.

The "flawed idea" comment was funny though, keep em coming please :)

Would like to add, I hope they increase the amount of fingers we can register. As of now, it's only three. At least give us four, so I can register my thumb and index on both hands.

You can add 5 fingers....
