So I'm watching the French Open on NBC and they keep running this Samsung commercial on their series 9 laptop. It's basically a shoot out between the series 9 and a MacBook Air look alike; they talk about battery life and boot times but then reference it's "killer design". And at the end the MacBook Air clone gets shot. Their phone ads make fun of people standing in line waiting to buy (obviously a dig at Apple fans). Did someone in the executive suite tell the ad department to focus every ad on Apple? :p. outside of the Mac vs PC ads has Apple 2.0 ever directed their advertising against a single competitor like Samsung is?

Samsung is a CTRL-C company

They are vertically oriented with their DRAM, Foundry and Display business but their creativity involves ripping off other designs.

Apple is the top dog. This happens in other fields too. The top dog is what others strive to compete against; the always want to compare themselves to the "best." From a marketing standpoint, it makes perfect sense. It's just business.

Try not to take it personally, I guess? And try to remember the bright side: competition means Apple will push themselves even further. As Apple fans, we win, really.

Why are you upset that consumers have choices?
You get what you want, somebody else gets something different.
Everybody is happy. Well, almost everybody.

If the Samsung ads are effective they will keep running them. If not they will stop. There are a lot of ads I don't like, but I don't run to a forum every time I see one to complain.

Apple ran their PC vs Mac campaign for 4 years and 66 commercials. Chill out. Samsung has a long way to go until they reach the bar set by Apple.

Samsung is a wannabe but will never be if they keep ripping off Apple's MBA.

Samsung is as clever as Apple. It's time for some people to relax and look around.

Their are many industries comprised of companies that steal others ideas, or copy their products. It's been like that for a very long time.

I am happy with both Apple & Samsung. Good competitors, good products, nice choices. That said I do have my favorites depending on product.

I greatly prefer Apple Computers, they've been terrific for years.

Then there's the brilliance of the new 60" Samsung LED Smart TV's I purchased recently, to replace the prior generation of thin & light Samsung widecreens I enjoyed. I also have an amazing new (nearly smart) Samsung Refridgerator. Next years will be the real deal, with the ability to interface directly with my Galaxy to keep me advised of the items I'm running low on.

At the end of the day, I celebrate all technological advancements. I'm not about to be denied of the convenience by only buying from one company. Nothing beats freedom of choice. Why some fear that, is quite puzzling.

Samsung may copy Apple's product design. However, it can never provide excellent customer service as Apple does. It will not provide OnetoOne, personal setup at the stores. In terms of software updates, Apple can push updates to everyone in hours but Android Updates may take months to reach consumers.

While your points are true presently, Samsung is not to be underestimated. Apples only business is in computers & consumer electronics. Until most recently their primary target market was the USA.

Conversely Samsung is headquartered in a country that has a very different culture than the USA. Its been less than three short years since Samsung decided to get serious about the smartphone business & most specifically the self assigned challenge of taking on Apple & the market within the USA.

Without sharing more specifics, suffice to say, we've only seen a small fraction of Samsungs intentions & related products. This rivalry is about to heat up and _really_ get interesting.

So true. The look for popular products in numerous industries and blatantly knock it off, even it's packaging accessories etc. Phones, computers, washers, dryers, fridges you name it. If Samsung see's a buck in it they're in, thieving as they go.

I strongly dislike Samsing, even before they ripped the iPhone, it's accessories and packaging.

What I find upsetting is that some people of society would take personal offense because two of the world's largest technology companies are simply doing business.

What good would it do for Samsung (or Apple for that matter) to go after a company beneath them? Nothing, in fact it would only widen the gap between them and the top. By having Apple and Samsung go head to head they are providing consumers with not only choice, but choice in regards to the latest and greatest technological advancements... I struggle to see why this is considered a negative to so many people.

I agree that Samsung may catch up. However, as it customises Android, it can never push updates to consumers as quickly as Apple does. Moreover, Apple products look better. Even if Samsung copies Apple's Macbook Air, its ultrabook can never look as good as that of Apple :)

The 'looks' of a product is very much subjective, and as such (in a general circumstances) stands no ground when deciding which product is better.

Apple was very anti-Microsoft and took them on as a competitor and trashtalked them up until they became the top dog.

Now that Apple is the top dog, other companies will do the same. That's just business.

I've heard that Samsung is desperate into getting the customer loyalty Apple has been getting.

Oh, Samsung. If you want that kind of loyalty, just do a great job. And don't boast.

You have a good point in what you are saying, but realize Apple doesnt make 60" LED tvs, so there is no competition in that aspect. But when it comes to computers, the OP has a point, Samsung is a biting copying little biatch@!:D

Canada, eh?
Apple can't cross the street without Samsung copying them.

Or you can look at it this way: if you cross the street and I cross the street after you, am I copying you? Maybe. But could it also be that whatever we're both looking for is across the street and we both realized we need to cross it?

Let's step back and look at the big picture.

Samsung was founded in 1938
They are a South Korean multinational conglomerate company headquartered in Samsung Town, Seoul.

Apple was founded in 1977
They are in Cupertino, California. On April 1, 1976 they incorporated as Apple Computer, Inc.

These are two vastly different companies, if for no other reason than the very significant cultural differences between the two.

If one takes the time to learn about the culture of South Korea, it's a known fact, they practice what virtually all present day large scale multinational corporations do, they gather intelligence on their competitors. They know what they are working on, and steal their ideas with the intention refining, modifying or otherwise using what they want without being caught.

Apple does it.
Microsoft does it.
General Motors does it.
General Electric does it.
and the list goes on and on and on.

It's a fact of life.

Samsung makes a mind boggling number of products, far beyond just the sector that Apple operates in. Here's a confirmation:
http://goo.gl/fJ6n5

Apple enthusiasts, in many cases only see the side of Samsung that makes smartphones. But the fact is, even Steve Jobs had a full appreciation for the Giant that Samsung is.

Oh sure, they may not have the level of refinement in their current line of smartphones, but that is but a sliver of their total business and one they have decided to focus on with as intense of an effort as Apple focuses on their product lines.

Therefore after realizing just how big of a threat Samsung could be, Jobs stepped back and went on the attack. Launching a very venomous law suit.

Am I advocating for Samsung? NO
Am I advocating for Apple? NO

What I am doing is simply sharing what I know about this situation.

What I am NOT doing is condemning Apple.

I believe Apple needs to defend against the violations (if any) that Samsung has committed, yet I don't see a need for Apple to go overboard and blow it out of proportion. This is where Tim Cook is a breath of fresh air, he will calm all this down and get it under control. Unlike Steve, he's more mature and not taking it personally. He understands business in a way that Steve probably did, but could not stop letting it get to him, and anger him to unrealistic levels.

FACT: What did Samsung do wrong? WE don't know, nor will we ever. We only know what we are being told, and what some of us want to believe. Those who are typically and blindly on Apples side without having all the facts. Nor will we ever, since business is conducted behind closed doors.

The "news", "information", or "facts" we get are highly filtered. Words are parsed and by the time the information reaches us it's spun to the satisfaction of either Apple or Samsung, to either companies benefit depending on the source of the "facts".

Therefore at the end of the day, speaking for myself. All I care is that Apple and Samsung compete in a reasonable way like every other corporation does and let them duke it out on the showroom floor. Let the customer decide what they want to purchase.

Let's not go to the extreme that Apple has taken, blocking the competitions ability to get the product on the shelf for sale.

Finally there is ONE undeniable fact.

Apple has a massive track record of success, a mind boggling stash of cash, and a well documented following of customers. It's not like Samsung could ever put Apple out of business. Apple is not on their last legs, and operating in the red. Wildly successful, richer than rich, why not use Apple's highly superior skill and expertise and get on with building world class product and blow Samsung away on the showroom floor.

So let's be reasonable continue to move forward instead of getting deadlocked and delayed in court.

Apple's too classy for that... Or at least they should be. I like Apple... A Lot!

I've been a very satisfied and enthusiastic customer, shareholder, and used their computers since 1991 to make my living. I have a lot (tens of thousands of dollars) invested in Apple. I want the "old" Apple back, the one that competed without all this acrimonious activity.

They can do it, I _know_ they can. Tim Cook is the man that can.

Cheers... :)
