Coming to an iPod or iPone near you in 2009?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7057717.stm

Electronics giant Samsung has shown off what it claims is the world's most powerful chip for use in memory cards.

The 64 gigabit (Gb) chips could be used to make flash memory, commonly used in MP3 players, capable of holding the equivalent of 80 DVDs, the firm said.

The chips are built using circuits with a minimum feature size of just 30 billionths of a metre (nanometre).

Rival firm Toshiba has said it is also working with similar technology. Both firms will release products in 2009.

Sarcasmville.
Look at them nails! Not to mean to the hand-model, but the top finger looks like a prawn tail. Or is it just me?

Sorry, it was the first thing I noticed , but onto the important issue: 64gigs is getting into laptop hard drive realms. Stick few of those baby's into a 2.5" drive case and wham!

Or if they were fast enough, could we not use them as a sort of Level 4 cache?

Not to pass judgement but I don't think those are really female hands either.

Oh, I'm sure they're female... just with fake acrylic nails, and a bad nail polish job.

But yeah, 64GB flash drives would rock!

Slow down everybody. 64Gb (GigaBit) = 8GB (GigaByte). It would take 8 of these to make a 64GB iPhone/iPod touch.

Ohhhhh... so they're re-introducing an 8GB chip as a 64Gb chip, well if that isn't pure marketing genius I don't know what is.

Where do they get 80 DVDs from? Thats only like 100 MB per DVD! I don't think so!

yeah, I'm sure the article most likely refers to, and samsung is referring to a 64GB flash chip. unless they are referring to holding 80 DVD's in the form of physical weight

At any rate ..... 64GB's is pretty remarkable for a flash chip.

Phrases like that will be quoted like thread 500...

When flash replaces spinning disks, people will look at our computers as ancient...

are you serious? that phrase has very little resemblance to comments in thread 500. This phrase is glorifying the fact that a 64GB Flash chip which is 8 times the size of the one on the market today is on the way.

This phrase is relevant to the age (date) it was posted on. If it's ever looked back on (which I highly doubt) someone should say "the fact the word remarkable was used for a 64GB flash chip in the works on October 23rd, 2007 was a pretty fair statement"

This is a component-level announcement, not a product. The innovation is that they are using a new process to get the component density down from 40 nm to 30 nm, which means smaller and more efficient operation. 16 of these components can be grouped together to make a 128 GB product.

And there's the owner of those nails!

yeah well they still suck, straight cut acrylic nails, yuck! Good thing they are *not* done with even more hideous French white tips.

Ever notice how all Samsung and most Asian tech annoucements have pretty young Asian women 'modeling' the gear...wonder who the target market is for this advertising :D.

That being said, Samsung said last September that by the end of this year we would see 128GB CTF 40nm process announced then, in production. And yet, only the older still, 50nm tech flash has made it to market as yet. Samsung typically exaggerates the rate that they intend to bring out technology. Remember early last year the annoucement by Samsung of the 40in OLED prototype TV that was supposed to go into production by the end of this year?

I doubt we'll see this ever farther forward looking technology in 2009, probably more like 2010-11, just in time for OSX 10.6 when Apple finally starts to offer then as an option, lol.

It's based on future tech:

Samsung Reveals World’s First 30nm-class 64Gigabit NAND Flash, for High-Density Storage Cards

SaDPT represents a pivotal advancement beyond the charge trap flash (CTF) technology that Samsung developed for NAND flash last year when it introduced a new material (silicon nitride) and a new structural configuration. SaDPT resolves a critical bottleneck to forming sub-30nm circuitry by expanding the role that conventional lithography technology plays in the manufacturing process. Both Samsung’s CTF-based NAND flash technology and SaDPT are expected to provide improvements in cost efficiency for next-generation nanometer-scale designs.

Samsung’s SaDPT will employ existing photolithography equipment in 30nm-class production, which is expected to be commercialized beginning in 2009. By utilizing conventional photolithography equipment, Samsung can not only significantly speed up the process but also improve the cost efficiency of its manufacturing operations without additional facility investment. Samsung has applied for 30 patents in connection with its new 64Gb flash device.

Ok, so where are the CTF's promised last year? SaDPT uses existing technology they claim, or "expected to be commercialized beggining in 2009" ...I wouldn't count on it.

tgdaily says 1.8in 512GB drives will be made possible...almost enough to hold 2k res Hi-Def vid on the next iPhone revision of 2010.

http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/34487/135/

Let Samsung start shipping the product they annouced last year come 1st in 2007---which is really 2008...sometime, before that year ends???, before making silly claims about what they "can" or "expecting" to be producing something in 2009.
