Samsung Software talent reportedly being shifted from Android to Tizen

Samsung Electronics has begun moving software resources that were previously working with Android OS for Galaxy devices over to Tizen. Apparently the move is quite a big one and may even have resulted in more than 1000 people begin moved over from Android to Tizen. Samsung reportedly has a 5,000 strong team of developers that’s tasked with further developing and improving its operating system.

As much as I like Samsung devices for their display panels they have got to be the worst offenders for bloatware. My understanding is that Google and Samsung have had a falling out going back to the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 which got them in trouble with Apple.

The other problem for Samsung is that people tend to stick with the ecosystem they are fully invested in be it iOS or Android. Samsung might attract new users to Tizen but it will probably be 1st time buyers.

I read this sequence of posts and this immediately popped into my head:

To be honest, the only thing that needs an apology is the definition of humour for being a little over-stretched. Yes Samsung's engineering is pretty crappy, but we all know that. Making fun of it and being overly sarcastic stopped being edgy a long time ago.

Don't talk to me about their fridges. We spent well over €1k on a samsung 'Smart' fridge just over two years ago - a very fancy thing. Anyway - it decided to constantly defrost itself and set off an alarm at random intervals at least 12 times a day, even during the night. We rang Samsung, they sent out an engineer - who diagnosed it as a faulty board / chipset on the front end (it had a fancy display) however they no longer manufactured that part ... Their only solution to it was to offer us another fridge at a reduced price of €900 !!! Ridiculous .... I told them to get lost and I went out and bought a different brand entirely - and one that was less than €200 and a dumb fridge ... Has to last longer than a €1+k fridge for 2 years ... madness....

That is horrible customer service! I have had Samsung TVs for a long time with no issues so far. I have a 55 inch smart TV that is pretty nice.

Oh Samsung will definitely get a following but like MRU noted, if they don't get their act together on optimization and trim some of the gawd awful bloat. I wonder how long people will continue to endure it. I for one, will give Tizen a shot, but to keep me coming back. They have to show that they're dedicated to a solid OS.

Yeah....im sure it will hurt them some. Im sure not going to jump into a new OS with some nice Android phones coming out and my interest in Windows phones increasing. Windows is making some big strides imo. I have had a couple of Samsung Galaxy phones before but didnt get the 4 or 5.
Ill be skipping them again til sometime down the road IF Tizen is worth trying. Right now for me i dont care about it.

It'll be interesting to see just how many people make the jump with Samsung to Tizen as opposed to sticking with Android.

Since Touchwiz looks like Tizen by design, most folks will not know the difference ecosystem wise when Samsung does switch. Samsung switching off Android saves them from paying fees to Microsoft, puts more money in their pockets for their phones as well because you know they will offer their own store and services. My guess is it will be a flop.

Like Apple or not, their end-to-end model controlling both hardware and the software that runs on it has been incredibly successful and profitable. My take is that Samsung wants to duplicate this model, and they actually have an advantage over Apple in that they do the vast majority of their own manufacturing.

The key to this succeeding though lies with the developer community. If they're not willing to buy in and invest in and yet another OS, I don't see Tizen ever gaining a foothold.

I'd also say that Apple's advantage in customer loyalty plays a bigger role. Whether or not people move to Tizen depends largely on how loyal Samsung's customers are to them specifically. Looks of the OS have something to do with it.....but I don't think they've built as strong a brand as they'd like.

Evidence for this found in the decreases in smartphone sales and lackluster GS5 sales. They've been the hot trend for the last 3+ years....we'll see if they end up being a staying force or just another OS/OEM trying to hang on.

Yep, I don't see Samsung consumers being very faithful at all. I'm only on the Note 3 because it has the only stylus/Wacom solution out there, but I would ditch them in a second. They pissed me off this year with that Knox crap voiding warranty and the locked bootloader.

Knox is samsung's fault for sure. Locked boot loader is just a matter of fact if you buy a carrier android device from att, Verizon, or likely sprint. Htc one seems to be the only exception, not sure how they pull it off having htcdev work on those carriers phones.

International and tmobile samsung devices are boot loader unlockable, along with gpe(no Knox here either) if they ever do that again.

Knox can't be all bad (don't use it myself) but Google are adopting it.

I think samsung customers are pretty loyal in the UK. We queued up for the S5 and last month it was the top selling device in the UK. Samsung's are everywhere here.

Yes, the only reason I am against knox is the policy that breaking it voids warranty. While I have heard people have received warranty service on knox broken phones, you are rolling the dice if you are going to buy a samsung with the intention of breaking knox which seems to be irreversible. ..Like you can restore a jailbroken iphone and apple or anyone else will never know the difference, not the case with knox (on current samsungs at least, nobody knows about googles implementation).

The ideas around it for protection seem to be quite good. It probably has already helped with enterprise adoption.

Samsung used to have the rep of being extremely open, that's why some people are so bent out of shape.

I think samsung gets too much hate though. IMO they still have the best all around android phones, hardware wise
its hard for me not to board the touchwiz bashing train I have no interest in tizen, it would likely lack important (for me) google features, the hardware will only get them so far with me
