New iMac, and T5. everything had been working great, but power went out at house and later when it came back on the iMac did but the T5 shows as "Not Connected" (in the Samsung app) but there's a blue light on it and stuff. Searched online, saw something about MacOS permissions in the Security & Privacy section of System Preferences, but I'm not getting the "allow" options that reportedly needs to be pressed. Really odd.

What’s the Samsung app? I’ve never used that have just native USB3 working on same setup (I use T5 1TB as a media drive alongside internal SSD). Never had any issues, including when I had power outage, and or sleeping. 2017 iMac 27” i7. (Unlike a 2018 MM which has sleep issues with drives I’ve found).

its very odd. when I plug the T5 back in, all I get is a "T5 Setup" mounted drive. I've tried every version of deleting the app, unplugging, plugging - and it won't see the drive other than the setup.

I would recommend against using Samsung security. You should not need the app at all. If you open Disk Utility, you should see the T5 there and would then be able to erase it and set it up as a proper Mac disk.

yes, agree - but - I do have a couple of production template files I'd just created and would like to save before doing just that.

I went back and erased system/library files and was allowed to re-install the Samsung software - but it still is showing as "disconnected".

UPDATE: There was a software conflict between the Samsung firmware update and Mojave. Talked to Samsung who sent me the following:

  • Booting the system into recovery mode (“command + R” key + power on)
  • Open the “terminal” while in recovery mode
  • Type on the terminal : “csrutil disable”
  • Reboot the system and normal log-in
  • Re-install the PSSD SW
  • Open the “terminal” while in recovery mode
  • Type on the terminal : “csrutil enable” and rebooting
Basically you have to turn off the file security for the whole computer, reinstall the firmware, turn back on the file security and the computer will once again see the drive. The issue was because of the conflict, I could not use the Samsung app to "unlock" my drive - which I had naively set up.

You’re doing a firmware update on the T5? Didn’t realise macOS software via USB could do that...???

No, the update to Mohave created a conflict with the existing Samsung app software that does the security locking.

Once I got the data off the drive, using the above instructions, I wiped the drive and am now just using it sans the Samsung software - which is what I should have done from the start.

Samsung knows they have the issue, have updated the firmware, for anyone who still wants to use it.

I would have suggested a simpler solution but the important thing is that you're up and running again.

I had a major power outage last week while firing up a new Thunderbolt dock with two SSDs in it. Then, while repairing them, the power went out again.

I feel your pain.

It took a few hours but everything's good again.

My advice is to TURN OFF SIP and LEAVE IT OFF.
Things will go better that way.

There is no need for that for the vast majority of users.
