Hi all, just purchased a Samsung T7 for use with my 11” Pro, and for some reason the write speeds to the SSD are extremley slow. For example a file transfer of 4k video that takes 47 seconds to my Samsung T5 is taking 2 minutes and 11 seconds to the T7! has anyone else noticed this? Do I just have a faulty drive?

Thanks for any help!

Update - I reformatted the T7 to APFS and the file now transfers in 34 seconds. Must be something to do with ExFat the T7 and Ipad Pro not getting along somehow?

exFAT is a “noob trap” as I would call it. Offers compatibility between macOS and Windows in theory, but does not store files in a more robust and reliable manner than those proprietary file systems.

Also, iOS external drive support is more of an afterthought than something that is designed for it. Was excited back in iPadOS 13 days but disappointed.

I’m not surprised that such inconsistent results exist.

I've used exFAT on a variety of devices and drives and the only place I have ever had an issue with it is with the Files app on the iPad. In lieu of Files, I use FileBrowser Pro and it has worked great with exFAT external storage. If you need a Windows-compatible format, you're stuck with exFAT.

My solution is using third party drivers to bring support of other proprietary file systems. Either PC or Mac can be more flexible than iPadOS and such, so that’s still good. exFAT is useful when third party drivers are not allowed to be installed, such as public computers or managed devices.

Odd, though - it shouldn't be slower than a T5 also formatted as exFAT.
Thats what I cant understand? I get decent performance with the T5 on exFat, but the T7 is awful. I tried to reformat into exFat just to test it again, and same awfult performance. Would love to know if its the same with other users. Looks like I’ll use the T5 for exFat and T7 for APFS.
