Looking for feedback on either of these 2 storage drives for general file storage, photos and video. Photo and video are hobbies, and just starting to dabble in video editing

I’ve also heard that you can edit video from the Samsung drive, not sure if Sandisk is the same? (Just starting to dabble in that)

Intended for use with M1 MBP, IPad Pro 12.9, and MS Surface Laptop, and using with IPhone a bonus

Anybody used these drives? Like/dislike? Any issues with either?

I realise that for my use case I may not need the fastest drive, but intend to keep it for a long time and price difference is not huge between the two.

I have a new T7 and ran the default BlackMagic disks test on my current gen MBP. Formatted APFS it only does approx 750 r&w speeds. As exFAT it hits a read speed of a little over 1000 but for only a few seconds.

Great, thank you for that!

T7 shield by far and not sandisk nor regular T7.

T7 shield might not break speed records, but it is consistent in giving that speed. While the other 2 drop in speed up to 370MB after the buffer of controller is full.

Also if you are a mac user, you should be aware of the glitches with sandisk - it loses connection here and there and generally not advised for mac users.

On top of it sandisk runs the most hot - it is scary hot and idles really warm.

Be aware that a drive like the Sandisk Extreme Pro is probably using nvme internal technology, which means it will run HOT when writing at high levels for any length of time. This may result in the drive controller "throttling back" the speeds to cool it down. The speed reductions can be DRASTIC.

Samsung used to sell their own version of nvme/thunderbolt drives (the X5, I believe it was called), but has since withdrawn them from the market, probably for this reason.

I've also read posts from other users who have had problems with the Sandisk Extreme Pro drives.

The Samsung t7 shield is a USB3.1 gen2 drive. It doesn't have the higher speeds of the Sandisk, but it does seem to deliver a consistent level of performance (at least mine do).

T7 shield is what I'd suggest.

T7 shield owner here. I regularly transfer 120GB to/from this device. While it isn't near my NVME drives in speed, it's portable, doesn't overheat (does get warm), and its pretty consistent. Great replacement for my old 4TB spinner.

Those NVME drives get REALLY REALLY hot. I'm talking, cook eggs, start smelling like burnt electronics hot if they're not cooled properly and it drastically hits performance. I've done the external NVME enclosure, heat transfer pads, metal chassis and .... yeah never could get it to work reliably - so I'm a happy T7 Shield owner here.

If you keep an eye on your local Best Buy or Amazon - you can get them for really cheap.

Before going the route of having and separate enclosure and ssd I bought a Sandisk pro 4TB and it started having severe problems within a week. After some searching I found that people with Mac's seem to be affected at a pretty high rate. I would not go with a sandisk.

I run all photo/video archives from my external drive without any problems or loss of speed.

I've been very happy with my Sandisk drives AND my Samsung drives both. I do have a couple of the Samsung X5 NVME drives, and yes, they do get hot fairly quickly so I am mindful of that when using them. I am glad that Samsung is finally selling a 4TB version of their drives, and probably the next time I need one I'll try the Shield, see how I like it. My T7s are just fine, though, the one limitation being that they only go to 2 TB.

Thanks for your advice.
I just ordered a Samsung Shield 4TB Ssd :)

I'll add my 2 cents on the Sandisk. I had the 4TB Extreme Pro for a bit and it failed on me within a week... was just giving trouble and was not living up to its promise. I did not try the shield as I went with a separate enclosure and ssd.

I’m a bit late to the party. I have a 2018 MacBook Pro, the HD had to be changed 1 month after Apple care ended. I use aperture for photo editing to I use Mohave 10.14.6. My Seagate HDD is only 1TB so tI’ve to upgrade as I had a disaster when an Apple advisor gave me poor info. Working with a good one now. I want to know if anyone has experience with the Samsung T7 Shield with my operating system. I know I will have to format it, other than that reading user reviews can make one nuts.
thanks
