I just noticed that my MacBook Pro iSight looks like it's the exact same as the camera in the Samsung Trace 1.3 MegaPixel phone. Could just be a coincidence?

i don't think they look that similar.

Those are the best pictures I could find online. But in real life on my rev. A MBP it looks the same. Probably nearly the same cameras in terms of size and quality. Also when I hold my phone up to the side of the display it is the same thickness. Remember the photos above are taken from different perspectives and different distances.

i think most webcams look either the same or very similar when you look at it very closely.

What can you really change from one webcam to the next? Shape? Size?
Theres not much to change really, at least externaly.

it may be that both apple and samsung don't make their own webcam components so they just buy them from a suplier, and maybe that supplier happenes to be the same?

The isight is not even 1 mega pixel.

i think this has more to do with Internet bandwidth. not everyone has an ISP that will allow them to do a videochat involving a megapixel (or more) camera.

this isn't a problem for me, since i rarely use my iSight, but perhaps we'll see a better iSight in the next revisions.

you could take a picture of your phone with your iSight or another camera and post that to strengthen your contention.

It's a fixed focal length camera with a dome lens... how many different ways are there for it to look?

my first post covered that
that was the one directly above the post you quoted :p

It probably has to do with the fact that the phone matches the MBP in style and that (like I said above) it is the same thickness as the built in iSight. I guess it wasn't the best observation. The opening appears to be the exact same size, same rounded corners, same depth, different resolution though.
Just had to add these poor quality shots I took. :p

They are different qualities. They probably come from the same supplier, but they are different. The iSights are VGA (roughly .3 megapixel) resolution (640 x 480), whereas your Trace is 1.3 megapixel (1600 x 1200, I think).

hmm modding time maybe?

...given that it is the same form-factor and compatible...which it probably isn't.
