Long shot here; has anyone tried plugging in an external bluray drive into a MBP?

Every time I plug it in, it totally crashes my system: Finder fails, Menu bar is useless, can't open any applications, MBP is totally useless.

I have one on my Mac Mini, no issues with it being plugged in. Haven't actually used it & don't have a Blu-Ray handy to test with right now.

Yes
Plugged straight in, or through a hub, a powered hub?
The thing may be pulling too much juice.

10.12 made a lot of changes to USB drivers. Kernel panics are one known issue. Did you try the 10.12.1 beta? This fixed a lot of odd behaviors I was seeing, including crashes when trying to play music through a USB audio DAC.

Plugged straight in: Samsung SE-506 (was in a bit of a rush and didnt think to include a model number).

I haven't tried the beta (nor have I been a beta-testing-type). We'll see I guess. It's just getting disheartening at this point.
