Samsung is launching a pair of 2.5-inch hard disk drives this morning for use by suits and regular ol' plebs. The business minded SpinPoint MP1 is the most interesting of the two by far, offering a massive 200GB of data spinning at a 7200rpm off a SATA 3.0Gbps interface -- an industry best. They say it's intended for enterprise RAID and blade servers but don't be surprised when people start bunging 'em into their laptops. The lowly SpinPoint M5 then, goes up to 160GB at 5400rpm with a SATA 1.5Gbps interface. However, Sammy wants you to know that a "dual-disk" model is under development offering up to 250GB of storage. Both will begin mass production in May for undisclosed prices.

Put that in the new MacBook Pro's ;)

Does anyone know how long are the shelf lives of 7200rpm drives as opposed to the slower 5400rpm? Do they last a shorter amount of time before the HD craps out or are they basically the same? Pretty cool though, makes me wonder about what will be in my MacBook Pro when i order her in about a year!

Yeah, it is about the same, not much different. In about a year we will probably have 300GB drives.

And maybe some moderately sized Solid State Flash as another option?

Last I heard they were bringing out 64GB NAND this year, so they are still a bit off for NAND only laptops and as an addition these things will cost you the same as a regular HD so I don't think so. I think the flash part will increase over the years but it will be many years before it'll replace a regular HD.

64 GB NAND is enough for some users. The low end macbook still has a 60 GB drive, and I have less data than 60 GB on my laptop HD right now. Also, if 64 GB is this year, can 128 be far behind? And that would certainly be enough for many users!

sidenote: 64 GB flash-based full size ipods, anyone? :D

Don't know about 128GB but the price for the 64GB drive is already immense. Definitely not for the MBs and for the MBPs it is just not enough.
If the price were lower I'd be with you but for now the price per GB is just too high.

It would be good to see a laptop with 2 drives one Nand boot drive and one data disk that is just used for data.
