I know the specs only allow 4x4, but doesn't sandy bridge mean it can take 4x8?

I'd love to buy it with stock ram (2x2gb) and add one stick of 8gb for now (for a total of 12), and another stick of 8gb at a later date (for a total of 20GB).

Possible?

it certainly supports it, in regards to apple, no one knows. they didn't "allow" for 64GB in the Mac Pros for a about 10 months before listing 64GB on their website. - again macsales was the site to announce the support.

Apple doesn't sell upgrades of 32GB so do not list it as the limit.

Also keep in mind very few companies make 8GB SODIMMs are the moment so Apple cannot guarantee that they will work.

Once 8GB become significantly less than $800, like say $50-100, then Apple will list it as supporting 32GB.

Intel Sandy Bridge desktop chips can handle up to 32GB of DDR3-1333Mhz RAM.

I myself am thinking of sticking to the 4GB and just add 8GB to the vacant slots for a tidy 12GB.

I really wish Apple made 8GB the standard for the 27" iMacs.
