According to this article the new Xeons 2 core and 4 core have already been unveiled by Intel.

Is it possible that this summer, along with Lion, we will have a brand new Mac Pro with Sandy bridge and thunderbolt?

Very interesting stuff!

Part of me thinks Apple is slowly abandoning the pro market.

Another part of me thinks they might want a sexy new machine, processor, and GPU to showcase Lion, FCP, OpenCL, and ThunderBolt.

To some extent it is good that the macbook pros came out first. There are allot of reports of early problems with the thuderbolt interface as well as with the sata 3 drives. Hopefully they get worked out by the time the new MP's are ready.

Apple couldn't use those in anything else but the base Mac Pro. All those CPUs are SP versions, meaning that you wouldn't be able to get e.g. 8-core Mac Pro.

Apple will most likely wait for LGA 1356 and LGA 2011 parts which will replace the current Westmere-EP, Gainestown and Bloomfield CPUs. Those Xeon E3s will replace Lynnfields (X34xx), which are not even used in Mac Pros.

A new Mac Pro just a year after the last upgrade? I really don't think so, but I'll gladly let Apple surprise me.

Last I heard is that the Xeon sandybridge CPUs won't be out til late 2011. And considering how long it took for the last MP update, it may not be til early 2012 when we see an update, if we see an update.

Might as well be late 2012

It could be even longer given Apple's direction.. We might not see a Sandy Bridge mac pro until possibly middle to late 2012. Again, given Apple's priorities and where it makes most of its revenue, the mac pro is just 1/3 or a very small of the percentage of total mac sales..

Prepare for it to be longer than the 2009 to westmere.

Read the article I linked,

"In a conference call Tuesday with analysts and journalists, Boyd Davis, general manager of marketing at the Data Center Group, revealed neither the chips' pricing nor a precise launch date, but did say they would be out in "the next few weeks." The official launch will likely be just ahead of or during the Intel Developer Forum event in Beijing on April 12 and 13 – but Davis wouldn't say. All of the chips, including the 20 watt and 45 watt parts, are in production now".

Some versions of Sandy bridge Xeons might come out sooner than later....

It has been known for months that Xeon E3 CPUs will be out before late 2011. However, it has also been known that it is very unlikely that Apple will use them since they could not be used in the whole lineup (no DP parts).
