I'm getting ready to buy now, and think I will eventually have a MB or MBP for mobility and an iMac for home. The order in which I get these is flexible. I was thinking of getting one in the next few weeks and then the other after Santa Rosa came out. I was leaning toward getting a MB now and an iMac (or future small tower) later. However, is the Santa Rosa chip set going to be primarily for laptops or for all systems? Any recommendations on which to get first?

Unless you need the portability now, get the iMac once it gets updated (seems to be a matter of a few weeks most likely). If you would get the MB, presumably when it upgrades to merom, then you could be getting better performance with Santa Rosa because of the faster FSB. Then again, if the iMac gets a merom instead of conroe then you'd be in the same place at which point you would have to make your own decision based on your need for portability.

I'd get the iMac now. It's a really nice design, it doesn't seem to have many problems. The MB/MBP's still have a few issues (yes yes, "only the people with bad MB/MBP's complain" but there are people who get like 5 bad ones in a row - unacceptable!), which would more than likely be worked out by Santa Rosa.
The portability part would be mainly to get privacy in my home, and to take on the occaisional trip. However, the iMac is really a better fit for my needs (raw photo processing and music creation on Logic). I can still be portable in my house, just not when I get away--but that is not that often. We'll see what happens in the next few weeks. I have the money, but am not in a rush.

no point in asking these questions until we see what the next few weeks hold. I'm sure there are quite a few updates headed our way very soon, but we don't know what they will be yet, so it's pretty hard to make recommendations.

The iMac is actually quite portable. I sometimes think of it as a laptop with a real keyboard and mouse and no battery.
