"Santa Rosa"

Before we go any further i know we only have "Napa" chipsets with Core Duo's in the MB and MBP lines at the moment

Ok i just want to clarify somethings about the upcoming Santa Rosa Chipsets

So at the moment we have the "Merom" Core 2 Duo Processor which i believe has 667Mhz FSB, correct me if i am wrong. These may be making there way into the MBP's in september but then again 6 months down the road there will be a new chipset "Santa Rosa".

So what i want to know is will the "Merom" in these "Santa Rosa" Chipsets be the same "Mermon" that you can buy on the market at the moment or will they be different???

You are correct. Additionally, Santa Rosa will get 802.11n support and Robson flash drive booting.

so theres no point of getting a MB or MBP if they upgrade to Core 2 Duo before the release of Santa Rosa because there will be a new Merom in the Santa Rosa

Thats debatable. Depends on what you use it for

I'm sure it will slightly but for what you use it for it wont make that much of a difference. If you did hard core stuff ie video editing then it would probably make much more of a difference

Ive heard that Macbooks arnt good for that stuff im into hardcore gaming and Photography so maybe it will be better for me if i do that stuff on the mac aswell as i bord at school so i only get to my P.C in the holidays and weekends then load the pictures on and play my games but then i might be able to hard core game or play some games. But wont Apple put a new processor in the Santa Rosa Chips like the Conroe-L?

Paul - Merom is the CPU and we expect it to be shipping soon with the current Napa chipset on the main logic board. In early 2007 we will probably see the same Merom CPU BUT with the Santa Rosa chipset on the main logic board - bus speed will go from 667 with Napa to 800 with Santa Rosa. The CPU (Yonah or Merom) is NOT the same thing as the chipset (Napa or Santa Rosa). The Merom, when it starts shipping, will work with Napa and that same CPU will work with the newer Santa Rosa chipset when it ships.

The increase in Front Side Bus speed from 667 to 800 will translate to only modest observed performance according to many. So - I plan to purchase the Merom based MBP when it ships and not worry too much about the Santa Rosa chipset.

Wouldn't it be market savvy if they realeased an update of the MBP in September at the Apple Expo with the Merom in the Napa Chipset, to seperate the MB and the MBP and then realease a revision of the MB in November with the merom and Napa chipset for the christmas period then realease a MB and MBP with Merom and Santa Rosa chipsets in March/April or maybe even may for the MB

Oh and a question for "Apple Corps" how long would you keep the MBP for before getting an updated version??

Paul - we are expecting an updated MBP in early September with the current Napa chipset. The Santa Rosa chipset will not be ready ubtil sometime in early 2007. So your market savvy guess may not be too far off the mark.

My MBP/Merom will probably serve me well for about two to three years - depending on what graphics card it comes with. I'll load it to the max with memory and also purchase a 34mm or 54mm express card to connect to an external Raptor hard drive. The MBP will be used for High Definition video and high resolution photographs associated with my work. It will be driving an HD (1900 x 1080) projector. I have NO CONCERNS regarding the 667 vs 800 bus speed difference.

Paul - I forgot to mention that there is some debate as to how much real performance improvement the Merom will give us - maybe 10% - 14% or so. My hope is that the new Merom based MBP will have most of the rev "A" problems resolved - that may be as important to me as the performance improvements.

We may see: 54mm ExpressCard slot, dual layer burner, magnetic lid closure, improved screen and power brick assembly, etc. We just hope that the new features do not cause a new set of problems :-0

Most of us are looking to September 5 as the next likely release date - followed by the Paris expo (September 12 or so).

Mmm I going to be using mine for School, Gaming, Photography, Blogging so as soon as the new MB comes out i will go to the store and try some stuff on it. If it doesnt suit my likeing i will get a MBP, i probably will get a MBP anyway as i want dedicated graphics, which is seperatating the MB and MBP, also a mac that will last me a time period of 1-2 maybe will be good. The amount of defects on the MB and MBP is intense im glad i didnt buy them when they were first realeased im going to always get rev. B or later i might call it the...
