Hello everybody,

For a long time I used to work on my 2010 cMP 5,1 with a Radeon HD7970 without problems.

I would like to have more GPU rendering power and bought the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX580 8Gb.

I used a two individual mini 6pin to standard 6pin cables with a dual FEMALE 6pin to single 8pin MALE cable.

No boot screen, this is normal, and all seems to be ok.

But, when I run FCP X and load projet with HVEC Encoded Media, all the rendering are made without GPU being used ... slower than with my HD7970 (verifying with iStat).

The bench like Luxmark are OK, but not FCP X.

When i open project without HVEC encoded media ... it's ok.

It seems that there is a big problem with HVEC Hardware decoding !!

I can see that in the console :

VTDecoderXPCService

[HEVC] GVA ERROR: IOGVACodec not set

Anyone have an idea ?

Thanks a lot !

Frédéric

That's normal.

Apple intentionally stop us using any GPU hardware decode / encode in macOS. Your card's video engine will perform fine in Windows, but not in macOS.

I've seen someone on the Hackintosh group able to make use the RX580's hard encode. But I am not sure if the same thing can be done on cMP because they need to inject lots of stuff via Clover, which normally should not be done on a real Mac.

So ... if i transcode in prores 422 all is ok ...

But what is the future of Final Cut Pro Without Hardware encoding / decoding ??

Thanks for your answer !
