After around three months of flawless usage, in the last few days my Sapphire RX 580 has started to randomly blow its fans at full speed for around one minute. Then it goes quiet again.

This happens without an obvious pattern of events: i've just experienced it waking up from a sleep, but I've seen it also during normal usage (no heavy graphic tasks) or also during sleep.

Only changes in my Mac Pro are not extremely recent. I replaced the CPU tray with a dual but at least a month ago. I added RAM at the same time. I installed Mac Fan Control to check temperatures. But all of this happened around a month ago or more and since then everything was business as usual.

Tried simple reboot and also PRAM reset. No joy.

Any idea appreciated. Thanks.

For fans issue, you should also try SMC reset.

Anyway, are you sure the fan noise is from the RX580, but not from PCIe fan, or CPU cage's fans?

Yes...trying SMC just after typing this message :)

Absolutely sure...initially the Mac Pro fans were my first thought because the noise is quite high. But Mac Fan Control said absolutely opposite. So I opened the door and checked with a flashlight. The fans on the Sapphire are not moving most of the time, as in normal use of the computer, and it's definitely them moving when I hear the noise.

Let's see what SMC does.

Nope. Even SMC doesn't change much. It's totally random, more often in sleep...which makes it even weirder.

move the card to another PCIe slot and see if anything changes.
