It's a good survival guide and certainly the most common.

One thing's for certain, Lofty sure knows how to repackage his content! I wouldn't be surprised to hear that that book is available in a thousand different editions.

Great guide for sure! I'll be downloading this when it comes out, even though in an actual survival situation, the iPhone battery isn't likely to last long (guess it'd require careful conservation).

Pretty steep for this type of app, imho.

You can buy the cute little pocket size version of the book for almost the same price, which is probably more practical to have in a corner of your daypack or car trunk since it doesn't depend on battery power in an emergency.

will this iPhone SAS survival guide help me in pouring rain or when the temperatures swell to 40+ Celsius and -40 ?

If I'm in a humid environment, will this app help me?

This is more of an SAS office survival guide.


Why can't i just pull out my little SAS book that will work in all these conditions?

Though my suggestion remains to first buy a copy of the tiny Collins Gem edition, I have gone ahead and bought a copy of the iPhone version to check it out.

I will say that it makes an interesting addition to the hard copy. It'd make a dandy learning aid, if you want to spend some downtime catching up on something everyone already should know. Or a nice little multimedia reference when you're lost in the wilds of your local park.

Of course, you've got to realize that Lofty Wiseman is getting on 70 and in the included videos of his lessons, he definitely comes across as the old school guy he is. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But personally I'm a fan of the aforementioned Ray Mears, he's a new school guy. (Or perhaps an ancient school guy.) The difference between Lofty and Ray is the difference between fighting Mother Nature and being one with her. Nonetheless the information, enticingly packaged here as an App, is useful and accurate, and if it serves to turn on an new audience to the skills of survival, well... it's all good!

The extra doodads are a mixed bag. The morse code flasher is kinda fun, though not unique in the App Store, the sun compass is clunkily implemented, and the checklists seem rather short, arbitrary, and idiosyncratic (don't forget your Brew Kit!). The quizzes might be fun for a couple minutes if you're into that whole testing paradigm. The photo gallery is a shortcut to some of the book's reference pics, and the video's are perhaps the most charming/creepy asset of this App's accessory functions.

I still think $6.99 is too much for this App - - but if you're interested in this kind of thing at all, I'd recommend buying it without question at $2.99 - - but do yourself a favor and pick-up a hard copy for when it really counts - - they're $7.99 from Amazon and even cheaper used.

All in all, I rate the SAS Survival Guide iPhone App:
