So I recently saw a Front Page update concerning an EFI update for the new iMacs that enabled 6Gb/s SATA capabilities. Why would Apple update the iMac, but not the Mac Pro?

okay the new cpus in the 2011 imac can use sata III

the cpus in the 2010 mac pro can't use sata III

When the mac pro gets an update it has been about 8-9 months since the last update. The hope is SATA III will be there.

The chipset used in the new iMac supports SATA III, and it just needed to be enabled. Hence the firmware update.

As per the current Mac Pro, the SATA ports are on the ICH (I/O Controller Hub) are only SATA II. So the only way to get SATA III in those systems, is to use a PCIe slot. This will change with the next MP revision, but the parts aren't out yet.
