Sata 600 drives in a Mac Pro

Do the Sata 600 hard drives work in the 2008 MP which has Sata 300 connectors?
I assume that the speed would drop to Sata 300, but is it compatible and stable to use? Does it offer any performance benefits?

same connector. will revert to sata 300. Only benefit will be if the drive itself (but running at sata300) is any better than what you already have.
