Save As feature

I just upgraded to macOS Sierra and notice that when I am downloading documents from the internet and go to the Save As dialogue box, I only get to see the last saved folder.

In other words, the left column shows me the contents of the folder I last downloaded into. In Yosemite, the dialogue box showed me a few parent folders, too. I prefer seeing the other folders, as I do not want to save every document into the same folder.

I hope I am clear in explaining this. Thank you for your time.

I don't think anything there has changed with Sierra.

If you click on Pharmacology in your screenshot you can see the path and navigate up from there (screenshot). You should also see recents at the bottom. Also try hitting command-up arrow and it will move you up through the folder structure.

Column view is rendered useless since El Capitan, the entire file path is ignored except the last save point. The dialog navigation treats every last save point as if it was the root or something. It's always shown the path all the way back to the Volume itself. Now... no way to navigate except the Command + Up which sets it to where it should be by default. I just do not, cannot, understand the random, out-of-the-blue, willy-nilly changes Apple makes anymore, most of the time.

There must be a way but it's beyond my knowledge. I've edited many things in an attempt to get it back to normal for the past year and I've sent feedback to Apple. I would have told you any insight I have because I know how irritating it is. To be perfectly clear - I still deal with it daily, nothing I've done has fixed it.

There are a number of threads about it on Apple's forums since El Capitan was released. Again, they're answered by people who don't use Column View and don't understand so instead they just think the posters are noob idiots rather than reading and comprehending what's being conveyed. Second issue is that it's not necessarily the easiest problem to put into words.

All I see now is one column populated follwed by a bunch of empty, pointless columns.


Example.

Saving a file (named File-01) a few layers deep in Volumes/Archives. Everything about this is normal, no problems.

Next, save another file (named File-02), this is what's shown every time the Open or Save dialog is called. You can see that no originating path is shown through the columns, they're all empty. The last save point always becomes the new origin point. The Volume isn't even hightlighted in the sidebar - absolutely nothing is shown except empty columns.

You column-viewers should definitely lobby Apple for a reversion of this behavior.

I don't think there's any OS-altering method to return the simplicity of what used to be in this case. Pretty sure that TotalFinder et al doesn't address this (although you could contact the developers and see what they say).

Another workaround would be some sort of Folder Action that opens the appropriate folders upon a download. Whether or not that's useful would depend on the individual and his/her workflow. It is definitely slower.

That's exactly it. I, too, say we should bring this to Apple's attention. However, I have no idea if they would even listen...or where we would submit our thoughts. 1024724, your post is dead on, simple and to the point.
