Is it just me, or is this thing a cooker!
I borrowed the MPB of a friend today, wanted to get my hands on one before plunking down any more $$.
Since I recently purchased a 20" intel imac, ONE I don't have the extra 2200$ lying around and TWO I have a good sense of the speed of the INTELIMAC and the expectation that I would have for a laptop of a similar beast.
So, here goes in brief.
looks, HOT!! I really do like the looks of the machine, I don't care if it is a just a bit wider, just a bit deeper it is JUST a bit thinner and THIN is IN. As they say down south, you can never be too THIN or to FAST!!
Speed: FAST!
Okay, it is not as fast as the intelimac, 2.0. I have been using this machine for three weeks now and have grown used to its speed on certain tasks. Running Camino, Safari, iWeb, Iphoto, Imovie, Itunes. I have a real sense of how snappy it is, quick to load and then DISPLAY. With the 2.0 MPB with 1GB of RAM, it is a little bit slower for sure. It just doesn't SNAP like the 20" Imac does. It is not G4 slow, no way in heck, and compared to that machine it rocks for performance of certain tasks. But if you are going from the 20" intelmac on the above listed tasks, you will notice a slowdown of, oh bout 10% maybe 15%. Not 20% but a good 13%.
now, that is not an objective number that is a SUBJECTIVE number. I timed some openings of applications with the second hand on my watch, and I would put the 13% number at pretty hard. But, I mean it more subjectively. You just EXPECT something to happen and it doesn't and then a SECOND later it does. But, with the Intelmac, it would have already happened.
Is this nitpicking, sure as HECK it is. Of COURSE this is one of the top teer for laptops and speed, and CERTAINLY the fastest MAC Laptop ever. Uh, did I just say a bad word.
But, I have to say, hello my name is Bob and I use an IBM Thinkpad T42p, and while I know it is the devil it is a FAST devil.
Utopia, would most likely be using such a product as the T42p with the MAC OS, I'd like to see THAT horse flame on by.
And speaking of flaming, did I mention that my PANTS ARE ON FIRE?
Yes, one of the most noticeable things about this laptop is, that it is without QUESTION the hottest laptop I have ever held.
I kid you not, this is NO exageration it is JUST about too hot to touch. When sitting in my lap (I do NOT recommend this if you haven't completed the having children phase of your life) the thing made my legs SWEAT through my pants!
I later put it on the desktop, just sitting there for about an hour. It was cycling in and out of screen saver, or black screen and I came back to it after about an hour and lifted it up and sure enough, it wAS HOTTTT!
Is there no FAN? Is there no liquid cooling? Wasn't the whole point of the core duo that it runs cooler for the same watt output?
Anyway, I really liked it, save the small performance hit from the intelimac 20" (I know it is a laptop so please don't start a flame over that) but I think that the fact that I couldn't use it in my lap most of the time might be a no go for me.
Or maybe it is the fact that there just isn't 2.2K sitting around - ITSELF burning a whole in my pocket!
