I don't know how to best describe this so I'll just include an example screenshot. By default (across apps and across different file types) the macOS save dialogue saves files like seen in the screenshot. I can manually delete the duplicate text in the dialogue but it's a really strange bug. Anyone else experiencing this? I'm having this bug since Monterey by the way.

I've got the same issue. It happens when you have Finder set to show extensions and while saving, you try to edit the extension manually (i.e try to delete a character after the "." ). It also seem to happen when editing just the file name, but I haven't been able to reproduce this consistently.

It's not limited to any specific app, so I believe it's an issue with Finder/Save Dialog. I assume the is something Apple would need to fix. I've reported this bug to Apple (but surely won't be looked at for months).

Haven't been able to find a workaround so far, other than hiding file extensions in Finder.

Glad that I'm at least not the only one having this issue. Hopefully, it gets fixed soon.

Note: I have show extensions enabled in Finder's preferences.

If I select all in the name field and start to type, it adds the extension after the first letter and the cursor moves to after the extension for further typing (I'm selecting all and typing "test" here). It then adds the extension again after the name anyway when saving:

Selecting all is kind of a habit, as some apps don't have focus in the name field with the name already selected:

Does this happen to anyone else???

Ah... I I didn't see this and just posted about it too, and also reported to Apple just in case. Yeah seems to be a new bug, but I'm also seeing the cursor jump to after the extension when I start typing, so I'm often ending up with names like n.png.ame.png.

Also, I'm noticing that in third-party apps, the name field is rarely, if ever, focused when the dialog opens anymore. I'm pretty sure it used to always be focused and selcted so you could just type the name and hit enter.

Yes. It's one of several relatively small but annoying bugs Monterey brought. I miss the days when the name field was highlighted (minus the extension) when you hit the Save As or Export As field. A wider text-entry name field would be nice as well.

I guess the "workaround" is to disable show file extensions in Finder until this is fixed. Hopefully in macOS 12.0.2.
