I've been told to save down a load of files from illustrator 4 to illustrator 3. Are there any pitfalls I should look out for? The artworks are not multi-page so I won't have to worry about that.
 
Only thing I say is be mindful of any AI CS4 effects or tools that you've used which might / will likely get dropped off and try and work around them before down-saving. Try expanding things, rasterising, outlining etc to try and retain things that bugger up.

Thanks I'll look out for effects or tools – the mesh tool is used but I don't think that changes between 3/4.
 
text on curves is an other thing to watch out for.

if you don't expect to have to edit the text on the other end, you might want to consider converting to outlines.
