Saving my Texts from a Previous Backup.

I've asked this before, and I've searched a lot and nothing seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe I just don't know how to interpret the results.

Anyway, I recently restore my iPhone to eliminate all of the clutter and cydia problems I was having. I decided to JB with Redsn0w this time (instaed of blackra1n) because I've been told it's a lot smoother. I was also told to ensure the same problems don't restore, It's vital that I set up my phone as a new phone. Before I do that though, I want to save my text messages so I can put them back on my phone after I set it up as new. It is the only thing I'd really care to save. (Apart from my phones usage information, if anyone knows how to do that aswell, let me know!).

So if anyone can let me know a quick and easy, (or long and complicated... whatever it takes) FREE way to save my messages so I can put them on my phone again after I set up as new, and JB with Redsn0w.

(PS, if i need to JB now before restoring to access them I will. I don't really care as long as I can transfer them over)

I dont know of any way of restoring just text messages.
Restore from backup will restore everything and unfortunatelly you cant pick and choose what to restore. You have it all or nothing.
Not sure if you could save texts and then SSH them to a JB iphone again.
Sounds like a pain either way

I guess you can just do a screen shot of every text messages you have and save it to your desktop if that helps. Thats what I use to do... Hope that helps

I saw this before, but never really researched it, it looks like Windows only. I would be interested in being able to do this also, let us know if you find a solution. Anyway, this is it:

Save your sms.db (~/Library/SMS/sms.db) file from your iPhone to your desktop, restore/Jailbreak, then transfer the sms.db file back to your iphone. I haven't done this so I'm not sure it will work but it's worth a try.


You can go here and just backup your sms.db and view it anytime you want on your PC/Mac. Not exactly what you want but a great way to back up and save your text messages.

The SSHing (iFunbox) worked perfectly. Just slopilly jailbroke my phone with Blackra1n, pulled off everything I wanted to keep, and then Restored to 3.1.2, set up as new, and am now Jailbreaking it with Redsn0w.

Too bad I didn't know where my phone usage information was located though.

Not important, all it stores is my data usage, and my call time (which was extremly conviniently at exactly 1 day of talk time the day i decide to restore. )
