Hey, i cant remember if this was possible on older OS's but wont happen on FB.
i click a pic on my phone till it enlarges, press and hold pic and choose 'save photo' as shown in pic
I look in camera roll and its not there. im aware i can screenshot, but then i get the surrounding black areas
I try it on twitter and saves pics fine. so why not on facebook?

Some people have come across this issue with the Facebook app. Can't quite recall there being any particular cause nor a specific solution to it for those that run into this. You can try uninstalling and reinstalling it. Possibly restarting the phone might do the trick. Maybe even updating your iOS (if you are not on the latest) might get it working as well.
 
Facebook hasn't been granted access to your Camera Roll.

Settings>Privacy>Photos>Facebook>On.
