Saving time consuming styles indesign, illustrator

I've been taking time to learn all these advanced styles and I do mean spent ages on them!
When starting a new document the styles are gone. I revert to opening the original document and saving as a different file then going ahead and starting a new document.
There must be a better workflow than I am doing ?
Suggestions welcome .

After creating new document, go to Paragraph or Character styles tab and choose "Load styles". Navigate to document which contains your previously defined styles and they will appear in your current document. This is the quickest way I know.

Thanks, I was hoping of a way to set them in the preferences folder so it's preferences.

Here's the secret...

Start up InDesign but don't actually open up or create a new document.

Without any documents open, create your character and paragraph styles (or import them).

Once done, any new document will automatically have those styles available to them.

Thanks citizenzen. It worked like that in Quark too IIRC. I've completely forget this trick.
