saving w/ transperant background

I'm trying to make an icon and i need to save a picture as is with a transparent background. In Photoshop CS I cut out the background and it's transparent...then i go to save it and it just makes the transparent part white. I've tried multiple file formats...what do i do?

save as a .png file.

The regular save dialogue is very basic when it comes to exports. You will get a lot more flexibility if you use the "Save for Web" plugin or full ImageReady.
