got the "steam log in failed" finally got logged in, then it said that TF2 needed to be installed, but there are tf2 files in the steam folder, dont know if that makes a difference. am i going to have to sit through another 7 hour download, or is this avoidable?

Try verifying the files, logging out, logging back in, and running steam again. If you've already installed it, I would think that would clear out whatever the problem is.
If you haven't fully installed it, already, then Steam is just going to check for what files are needed for downloading.
I think Dagless and a few others mentioned that they copied files from their windows TF2 installation over to the Mac side to save some downloading; so you shouldn't need to download the whole thing, either way.
