I am using an HP LaserJet MFP M283cdw. Until not long ago, when I needed to scan something, I would go to System Preferences, click on the printer and use the scanner there.
For some time now, I can print but, when I try to use the scanner, I get the message "Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)".
I can still scan using the HP app but I have not found a way to crop the scan to fit the size of the document I want to scan.

Any ideas how I can get the scanner to work using the system preference way?

Try using the "Image Capture" app (applications folder). It allows you to resize your scans to suit what you want to do. I use it for my Canon scanner.

Thank you for all your suggestions.

Basically, I do not want to use any app, I simply want to be able to scan natively in macOS. I was hoping somebody knows a fix to this error message that doesn't make any sense (obviously, the connection is there since I can print wirelessly).

I gave up trying to to get the HP Pro8600 scanner to work on iMac. I would throw the thing in garbage, but just got all new cartridges, now it tells me I need a new print head assembly because magenta does print well any more. Tried cleaning it, but no dice. Resurrected my old Epson scanner and it works fine.

Why? I've used VueScan for years. It's updated frequently, very affordable and IMHO, works GREAT👍
