Scary Situation (iPhone earspeaker)

So I was on a call last night with the headphones, everything was working fine. I hang up that call and unplug the headphones, immediately I get another call. Mind you it is on vibrate, it flashed real fast and then the screen went off. So I didn’t think I had a call until I hit the home button and then slid the bar across to answer. Well I couldn’t hear anything, so I said hrmm maybe a glitch, and hit the speaker button. I was able to hear / talk fine through speaker, but it seems that the handset ear speaker was not working. I did a hard reset / Restore and still nothing.

After some troubleshooting, i also noticed that my keyboard clicks in SMS did not work either (it was off vibrate at this time). So this morning on the subway i did another hard reset and the keyboard clicks came back and i just tested an inbound / outbound call and was able to hear through the handset speaker.

Let’s hope they get firmware 1.1 out there real soon....

Anyone else ever hear of / have a problem like this?

I had the same problem. I did a restore and resets. Keyclicks work in safari and texts now but the proximity sensor still doesn't work so the earpiece speaker never engages and the keyboard never locks.

Off to the Apple store tomorrow, I guess.

I headed up to the Apple store this morning with my phone still not working. Surprise of surprises, it worked perfect after the 90 minute ride up there. I explained my situation to the Genius anyways. Even though it was working fine at the time, they replaced it anyways to save me another trip in the case it stopped working again.

Even though the problem was aggravating, the store in Tigard, OR came through for me again.

This has happened to me when the earpiece stopped working.. Even after I did a hard reboot, it did not work. What happened was I had unplugged my headphones while in the iPod, and then I guess it got in a weird state where the earpiece wouldn't work cuz it thought I still had a headphone plugged in. I had to go to the iPod (even after a reboot!), play a song, and then stop the song. Then the earpiece started working again. My situation was a little different but I guess the common thing is that there is *some* bug.

not sure it's just me or just the Apple that even I checked at Apple store, the left speaker is pretty much not able to hear at all. If you cover the left one, the right one is way much louder than the left side. But when you plugin the head set, it's normal.

Can some one please shed some light?

If I understand you right, the speaker on the bottom? There is only one, the left side. The right side is the microphone, not a speaker.

Yes, those bottom speakers. You gotta be kidding me! Only one speaker? and one Microphone? The sound is so bad on the left side. And the right side is so loud.

Anyone reported this to Apple yet or it is the way it should be?

LOL.... That is how it is! Why would you need or want two of each anyway?

I am not aware of a phone that has two speakers, and iPods don't have any.
Use your headphones...it sounds great.

I'm having the same problem. I unplugged my earbuds after pausing a song and my clicks and phone ear piece haven't worked since. I completely restored everything back to factory with no success. Has anyone found a fix? I don't want to send my phone back to apple and I'm not near a store.

Plug your headphones back in, then remove them. It appears the iPhone occasionally does not see the unplug event, and continues to route the audio and mic to the headphone jack. Plugging and unplugging again gets it back in sync.

Same thing happened to me twice. I was using the ipod and earbud speakers and then when I unplugged the buds, the handset speaker wouldn't work, but speakerphone would. I finally figured out how to fix it by playing the iPod again with the buds in, pausing it, playing it, then pausing it again and pulling the buds out. Some kind of wierd bug...no biggie though.

Use your headphones...it sounds great.

Sony w600i has 2 speakers....and if you modify it, when playing a song the music will also play through the earpiece. So that's 3, count 'em, 3 speakers....and loads of Verizon phones have 2 speakers.......(w600i is a Cingular phone)

Apple did do wrong here with only 1 speaker...not to mention, 1 ****** speaker! Unless the volume level can be fixed with a software/firmware update....this is one issue that's on the down with the iPhone.

I've just discovered this bug for myself too. Thankfully I guessed that it must have something to do with me using the iPod earlier today and reconnecting the earphones cured the problem.

The reciever BUG is all over the Apple Forums and is well known. Based on my 6 months of monitoring and helping those on the Apple forums, it seems that it is a hardware issue that will have to be fixed with a new version. Until then, the easiest fix for all has already been mentioned.

If your clicks and/or reciever stops working and you were just using your headphones then....rapidly plug/unplug your headphones until the sound returns. Some of the other fixes mentioned also work but this seems to be the most common and quick fix.

Also, there is only ONE speaker on the iPhone and one microphone. Putting two speakers that close together at the bottom would serve NO purpose as they would be to close together to give any simblance of stereo sound. To my knowledge there is not a phone out there that has two speakers. Visual balance and appeal was created by making the microphone and speaker look the same.

Hope this helps those that are still having a problem.

Yup, just had this issue.

Long time listener, first time caller.

I had this same situation. The external speaker would ring, but would not produce other sound. The ear speaker would not work at all and the receiver would not pick up sound, unless I was in speaker mode. After trying the quick fix of plugging and un-plugging the ear buds, nothing happened. Restore it a couple of times. Nada. Ended up taking it in to the Apple Store, and they just replaced it. So, except for a couple days of frustration, I'm happy with the resolution of this problem.

Just happened to me... I borrowed a co-workers headphones and plugged them in and the iPod opened, strange... I then unplugged them, nothing. Did it a few times and the sounds returned. Of course this is after I restore my phone using my work computer. Thankfully Apple thought of a person restoring on another computer then their own, since it asks you to backup before. Everything is back except pictures and music.

I hope this is just a software state issue, and not a physical sensor getting stuck inside the phone. My last phone a KRZR had to be replaced 10 days after the warranty because of this exact same issue.

its really weird, but i think that a piece of something gets in there, dust, whatever. if you blow vigorously into the headphone port. it solves the problem
